The first post office opened in 1870; it became known as Menomonie until 1895 when it changed its name to Brown Deer because then-Governor James Ginter offered the new town to him if he would rename it that too In 1897, Brown Deer incorporated as a city under the laws of Wisconsin; it remained an unincorporated community until 1959 when it became part of Fond du Lac county through local government reform effective January 1, 1959. On November 3rd 1921 a tornado affecting parts of northeast Wisconsin killed six people (three women including one mother with five children) near De Pere where they were driving home from dinner with their families; all but one child survived. He died as aresult from injury sustained while fighting at Argonne Ridge France on October 14th 1918 aged just 25 years old leaving behind wife (Dorothy), 3 children(John Fenton Jr., Cynthia Jane & Robert James), 2 stepdaughters (Eleanor Naomi & Kathleen Haggerty) father(George Washington Fenton) mother(Maud Elizabeth Trimble) siblings(Henry Trimble & Clara Alice Dodge). Brown Deer, Wisconsin was first settled in 1836 by the Chippewa tribe of Indians. The town was named after General James K. Polk, who helped independence be proclaimed in Ohio. The townspeople were able to build a courthouse and other public buildings in 1837. The population of Brown Deer grew rapidly during the early 19th century because of its location at the junction of two wagon roadways. The growth led to development of businesses and a need for services such as schools and churches. In 1854, the town became one of the few towns in Wisconsin to receive a railroad signal station.
