In 1847, the first factory in Brookfield was established. The company manufactured ammunition for the U.S. Cavalry and other troops in the Wisconsin territory during the Mexican–American War. Ammunition production continued until 1901 when a new plant was built in nearby Menomonie to produce smokeless powder for firearms manufacturing. Today, most of what is produced by Munitions Incorporated is smokeless-powder ammunition products such as shot shells and bullets.
Brookfield is a town in the Wisconsin Department of Administration, located in La Crosse County. As of the 2010 census, the population was 20,711. The name Brookfield may come from a place called Brockenbrooke in Norfolk, England which may have been where one settler named John Brooks arrived in 1785. Brookfield was organized as a town on July 1, 1854. It is home to Northwestern University and many other businesses and institutions. The first settlers to Brookfield were Levi Allman and his family who came overland from Tennessee in 1836. They erected a cabin on the east side of what is now North Main Street. Others early settlers included Daniel Boone and his party who founded what is now Elmira on November 12, 1800. In 1836, Jonas Sorenson took up land at present day North Main Street and built a log cabin thereon known as "Sorenson's Grove". He also raised chickens and hogs there until 1840 when he sold the property to Isaiah Bowman for $200 cash. A post office called Brookfield was established in 1841, but it was discontinued due to lack of subscribers. A new post office called "La Crosse" was established on January 1, 1850 by order of Gov. Julius Cephus Wright with part of current North Main Street given to him as compensation for his earlier donation (northwest corner). On October 15, 1865 an act entitled “An Act To Establish Schools within this Territory” became law by which Northwestern University (then still an private institution) received land east of Montrose Avenue between State Road 10 and Park Avenue for educational purposes; thus “Brookfield Township” became home to one of America’s most renowned universities! On December 5th 1870 United States Senator Augustus Davenport delivered remarks before the Ingersoll Machine Company at their plant near South Highway 54Th Street & Genesee River about how manufacturing could be brought into this country through immigration; interrupting Representative David Boren’s presentation about how these same immigrants were bringing starvation food relief into our cities! The event helped spur Congresswoman Clara Barton (D–IL), then newly elected president pro tempore of the Senate (under Republican rule) into forming an investigative subcommittee chaired by Senator Charles Sumner hearings would soon be held looking into illegal foreign trade with Mexico! In 1903 several brooks running through Brookfield formed what later became known as "the creek system." At that time it rained all summer long so water pooled at ground level creating pools large enough for swimming inside pools available only during high water times outside during low water times you had to get out if you wantedto play or use the showers or just wash your hands! After heavy rains stopped flowing some people started using septic systems because they couldn't seem to stop getting ridof all that water no matter how much they drained even after putting green ditches across streets!
