Beloit is a town in the U.S. state of Wisconsin, founded in 1847 and located on the Beloit River. The population was 20,869 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Kenosha Metropolitan Statistical Area. The city was named for General James Belknap (1780-1853), an American general who served in the Mexican–American War and as commander of Fort Snelling during the Dakota Sioux Wars. The first settler in what is now Beloit was John Brown, who moved from Hartford, Connecticut in 1836 to what is now downtown Beloit. He built a log cabin on current site of the present day City Hall building in 1839, which he called "Mr. Brown's Cabin". A year later he sold his interest in town to Elias C Pere Marquette (1807-1868). Beloit became a village on December 12, 1840, when it had a population of just six people. On January 1st 1846, it incorporated as a town under territorial law with a population of 16 residents. In 1850 it had its first post office - opened by Elijah Brouwer - and first store - built by Isaac Wohlgemuths & Co.. At that time there were only two churches in town - one Congregationalist and one Baptist - both erected soon afterwards by members of various families that settled thereabouts: Increase Mather (1793-1875) started construction on First Church northwest of Main Street; Abram Deighton (1800-1876) began construction on Second Church northeast of Main Street; Caleb Green (1800-1865) organized and supervised construction at Third Church southeast corner North Main Street and South Division Street). By 1870 there were four churches and over 100 residents living within limits proposed by Town Board; but all prospects for further growth died out due to fierce Indian hostility throughout Northwestern Territory which followed rapidly ensuing Civil War... In 1865 local resident Josiah Hesseltine purchased land east of Main Street from Abram Deighton for use as an agricultural district...During this period additional development occurred chiefly through timber production with sawmills operating near present day University Place; however some brick buildings were erected including Holy Name Parish Schoolhouse which stands today southwest corner High Avenue east Of State Road 474... In 1902 Kenosha annexed much of Beloit while still supporting separate school districts...Today most businesses operate outlandishly close to Downtown where services are provided by five large blocks bounded northwardly by First Avenue/State Road 474 running through Downtown then continuing across State Road 548 serving mostly suburbs outside Loop Community Development Authority boundaries until terminating abruptly just past restaurant called "Plymouth" fronting onto Exchange Drive thence continuing around block ending at house showing name listed above lot number 426 Mail Code 01719

The most recent name change was to Beloit, WI in 1972. Beloit is located in the Milwaukee County area of Wisconsin on the east side of Lake Michigan. The population was 9,821 at the 2010 census. According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 2 square miles (6 km²), all of it land. Beloit first started as a small village called Harbor Point on both sides of river that flows through it into Lake Michigan about four miles east of present day downtown Beloit. A post office was established there in 1836 and remained active until 1862 when it merged with another post office two miles away in what is now Wauwatosa to form today’s downtown Beloit Post Office Company building which still stands today adjacent to First American Bank Riverfront Park contains several beaches including Big Beach which used to be very shallow but now has Depths up to 26 feet (7 m) during high tide due to construction on shoreline last year that raised water levels 5 feet (1 m) or more exposing soft sand making swimming unsafe seasonally). There were also quarries near what is now Downtown Beloiot back then too so commercial fishing continued even though access improved greatly from dredging operations completed about 1960s thru 1990s creating Long Beach Channel between harbor point north and kiln beach beloiot just across from Kiln beach park today all developed courtesy state/govt./private entities public open space not owned/operated by city government .Today's Downtown business district includes both old and new buildings some dating back 100+ years including one original house built by slave trader Augustus Kelley who later became mayor being offered free property if he moved his house from Back Bay Village where it once stood next door
