Beloit, Wisconsin is a city located in the northwest corner of Wisconsin. The population was 24,848 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Beloit County. The community began as a small farming town founded by Norwegian immigrants in 1868. The name "Beloit" may be derived from English words "betheal," meaning "prominence." Beloit was founded in 1837 by the brothers Amos and Edward Beloit. The town grew rapidly during the late 19th century, becoming one of the largest cities in Wisconsin. During World War II, Beloit played a key role in the country's defense by providing munitions and other supplies to the war effort. In 1967, Beloit became home to the world's first large-scale food production demonstration project, known as "The Great Hunger."
