Beloit, Wisconsin is a city in the United States. It is the county seat of Beloit County and one of the twelve most populous counties in Wisconsin. The population was 146,749 at the 2010 census. The city is located on the east side of Milwaukee River, bordered by Racine to the south and east, and Waukesha to the north. The first gun barrels were made in Beloit during 1836 by David White and his son-in-law John Fitch from an early English Army barrel company founded in 1795. By 1846, all but two of Beloit's fifty guns had been built with wrought iron or brass construction by Nicholas Ewing & Sons (a steel works). The first rifles manufactured in America were made at BELOIT Arsenal on November 5th, 1836 by George Stephenson & sons when they received a shipment of artillery barrels from England. Thebeloite Arsenal produced over 1 million rifle rounds between 1836-1854 inclusive. In 1840s muzzleloading pistols were also produced at BELOIT Arsenal starting with revolvers then later becoming pump action pistols which became one of America’s favorite arms due to their accuracy and firepower while still being concealable under clothing. Pistol production stopped around 1860 because of technological advances such as percussion caps which allowed firearms to fire more than once per round making them more dangerous opponents for law enforcement officers

In recent years there has been growth in light manufacturing such as health care products and technology; however, heavy industry remains a significant presence including large agribusinesses such as Archer Daniels Midland (ADM) and Boeing Co.. Beloit also boasts several world-renowned universities including Northwestern Illinois University (NUI), one of only two private universities within Chicago metropolitan area; Marquette University; as well as many other colleges and universities serving parts or all of central Wisconsin from Racine through Menomonee Falls to Appleton–Eau Claire.
