Beloit, Wisconsin is a small town in the U.S. state of Wisconsin. The population was 1,541 at the 2010 census. It is the most populous community in Beloit County and home to many businesses and factories as well as Beloit Community College. The name "Beloit" comes from two French words: "Beaune" meaning wine and "lote" meaning lot or parcel of land. The area now known as Beloit was first settled by German immigrants in 1834. One of the earliest business owners in the town was Otto Kappeler who started a sawmill on the Ottawa River near present-day downtown Beloit. In 1868, J J Bachman bought 2,000 acres (0.8 km²) of land west of downtown for $10 per acre ($2 million today). The townsite that now includes downtown Beloit was platted on October 14, 1890 by George Fenton under his platting company name of Chicago & Northern Railroad Company with what is now First National Bank across from current day State Street between Washington and Superior Streets being built as its headquarters and storeroom during this time frame. At this time it had a population of 350 people which included 100 men employed by First Northern Railroad Company working on construction work on their new line from Racine to Milwaukee along what is now I-94 just east of townline into Plymouth County In 1907 local landowners Constantine Puschak (owner/operator White Horse Tavern), Averill Harriman (founder/manager American Telephone & Telegraph Co.) and others donated some 220 acres (800 m²) upstream property southeast of town to become the nucleus around which would grow modern day downtown Beloit while also donating 50 acres (20 ha) southwestward corner lot into what became Village Green Shopping Center all within one block bounded by Washington Street, State Street, Third Avenue NE and Plymouth Avenue NE; all three parcels were combined into one large blockship known then as North Park Blockship #1 with dimensions about 24x24 feet (~7x7 m). This large blockship formed an NW/SE axis running north-south with streets angled at 25 degrees off true north; 200 feet deep (.61 m) below ground level these walnut trees lined both sides lived until 1903 when they were cut down due to overgrazing caused by later development nearby including Northwestern Mutual Life Insurance Company's building directly across Third Avenue NE from original North Park Blockship site Aerial photo taken December 20th 1990 looking northeast towards old City Hall site shows how much larger than earlier Blockship #1Perhaps still standing today are meters(?) measuring depth at foundation which suggests there may have been more than 400 ft.(120 m) beneath surface when blockship first stood

Beloit is a small town in Wisconsin, United States. The population was 5,812 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Beloit, WI Metropolitan Statistical Area. The community was founded in 1854 by John Beloit and his family. It became a city in 1959 and has since grown to be one of the most populous cities in central Wisconsin. Beloit's rich history dates back to 1854 when John Beloit and his family came to the area from Minnesota. He founded what is now called "The Second City" on the site of what is now known as Beloit Park, which he named after himself and his wife Belle (née Miller). In 1857,Belle married George Stephenson, who had come to this area from Green Bay. After they were married, George Stephenson donated land for a public square near whereon modern day State Street runs. This square eventually became known as Stephenson Square after him and Belle both died in 1865. In 1889, Mayor James Worthy proposed that the name of the city be changed to honor General Anthony Wayne during America's Custer Wars victory over Great Britain at White Hills Battlefield - an event which made him one of America's most famous soldiers. On October 16th of that year, a resolution was passed by the City Council authorizing then-Mayor Worthy to rename the city "Anthony Wayne." The new name finally replaced "The Second City" on November 15th of that year with its current form - Beloit – thanks largely to Mayor Worthy’s efforts! Beloit began as an agricultural village located along present-day State Street just east of present-day Lombard Avenue (then Lombard Road). By 1860, however, much development had occurred in surrounding rural areas so much Soo Line Railroad traffic had shifted away from farmers living within easy driving distance of Beloit that it seemed necessary for residents within those boundaries to build their own homes rather than rely on subsidized government assistance enjoyed by those far away inhabitants; indeed this required outside investment more than just building money into farmsteads! Consequently early 20th century milling operations began hereabouts with flour brought downriver every week or so for baking bread (by wagon) at various Harriman mills until such time as storage could be arranged downtown; thereafter goods were transported several miles via stagecoach or buggy ride home while being unloaded on Market Square before being delivered fresh off those wagons across Main Street through belknap County Doorstep! As railroads bored deeper into moorspace many villages throughout Central Wisconsin relocated production northward alongrighteous River valleys becoming Hamilton Mills Village (now Kenosha), Newtonia (now La Crosse), New Glarus (now Fond du Lac), Grand Forks Junction (later Milwaukee), Appleton/Waukesha/Vermilion Heights...the list goes on! Some may have disappeared altogether due simplyto depletion but majority re-established contact with surrounding communities during two significant periods: 1920s thru ‘30s when manufacturing declined & WWII when industry returned Although some buildings have been lost entirely (& no evidence exists whatsoever supporting any contention otherwise!), most notably Lombard Avenue between State & First Streets (& South Clinton Ave between First & Washington Streets) remains virtually unchanged since first settlement predates even today’s Interstate Highway System!!!
