Beloit, Wisconsin is a town located in the eastern part of the United States. It was founded on July 3, 1851 by John C. Beloit and his wife Eliza. The town has a population of over 60,000 people today. The town's name comes from "beal", meaning 'a small stream' and "otter," which means 'waterfowl'. The first ammunition store in Beloit was opened in 1857 by J.W. Fenton and Geo.Moses. In 1859, Alder & Spaulding began selling ammunition here as well. The first wave of settlers to Beloit arrived in 1854, following a Burlington Railroad line that ran through the community. By 1870, there were over 100 residents living in what is now Beloit Township and 36 businesses had been established by that year. The railroad's demise in 1884 caused a big change for Beloit; it became an agricultural center with dairy cows being milked for cheese, eggs and other products from nearby farms. One of these local farmers was James Jepson, who built his first farm on what is now East First Avenue just east of Center Street in 1904. His son-in-law John Aiken opened the first grocery store in Beloit in 1922 and soon followed suit with several other stores before becoming one of Wisconsin's leading retail merchants. In 1938Beloit became home to its only high school when Waukesha High School moved to its current location on North Fourth Street near Lake Michigan Boulevard (now State Street). That same year saw the opening of what would later become known as "the Town Hall" – a three-story brick building located on South Main Street which served as both civic center and community hall until demolition began in 1984 to make way for a new shopping mall across Commerce Drive
