Bellevue is a town in the U.S. state of Wisconsin, located on the east side of the Milwaukee River. The population was 14,812 at the 2010 census. Bellevue is one of many towns that make up Racine County and is part of the Milwaukee–Waukesha metropolitan area. The name Bellevue comes from a French word meaning "vale of milk." Bellevue was platted in 1836 by Nicholas Barclay and others as Bellevue Township. It became a city in 1907 and was renamed Racine after its original county seat, Racine, Wisconsin. In 1912, it became a part of the newly formed Milwaukee–Waukesha metropolitan area which includes all but five municipalities in Racine County. The first European settlers arrived in what is now Bellevue circa 1787 when Captain John Endicott and his party set out from Green Bay for what is now Superior, Michigan on their way to find new land grants. They built cabins on Cannon Hill overlooking the river where they lived until 1800 when they left for good because of difficulties finding water supplies inland during this difficult time period with little reliable transportation available other than dogsledding over snow-covered hillsides into unhealthy areas near Lake Michigan The first permanent settler in what is now Bellevue was Nicholas Barclay whodied in 1836 while still trying to find a place to farm his land grant near present day Watertown due to lack of water availability and harsh winter weather conditions at that time In 1904 following World War I changes within Wisconsin caused large numbers of people living eastward along the then almost empty Fox River Valley (now Beloit) to move westward onto lands adjoining Racine County including parts of today's Bellevue Upon incorporation as a city by an act passed by the City Council on May 15th 1907 Racine voters approved changing their county seat from Racine to Bellevue effective July 1st 1907 making BellevUEthe 4thWisconsin city

In 1924, it joined Milwaukee County as part of its larger form. As Milwaukee grew increasingly suburbanized during this time period, Bellevue began struggling to keep up with changes within its own borders. In 2001, Bellevue lost its independent town status and became part of downtown Milwaukee; however, it retains some unique characteristics such as an annual parade that takes place on Memorial Day weekend
Bellevue was founded in 1836 by Danish immigrants, and became a city in 1903. The city experienced several waves of settlers throughout the 19th century, including Germans, Swedes, Poles and other Europeans. Bellevue's growth continued into the 20th century with the arrival of multiethnic Americans, Italians and French. In 1922 Bellevue became one of the first cities in Wisconsin to be racially segregated.
