Bellevue has been home to many famous people over its history including: Dr. Jonas Salk (creator of polio vaccine), Woodrow Wilson (president from 1913-1921), Alice Paul (founder of the National Negro Congress), Charles Lindbergh (first successful American solo airmail pilot), and Neil Armstrong (the first human being to walk on Earth). Bellevue is a town in the U.S. state of Wisconsin, located in the Beloit and Rock County areas of the Midwest. The population was 7,890 at the 2010 census[1]. Bellevue is part of the Milwaukee–Waukesha metropolitan area. The town started as a small village called Bellevue Grove on land that now includes much of downtown Bellevue and parts of North Side, East Side, South Side, and West Side. The first post office was established in 1853. The area around present-day Bellevue was first settled by Germans in 1848. Some early residents were associated with the fur trade and others chose to settle because of cheap land accessibility near Lake Michigan.[2] In 1855, Harrison Wickersham surveyed and laid out what would become Bellevue Township which became one of eight townships founded in Wisconsin during the mid-19th century.[3][4] By 1860, about 100 people lived in Bellevue Township and it had a school (later renamed Bellevue High School).[5][6] Bellevue's most important development took place during Prohibition when many local businesses became involved in smuggling alcohol into America from Canada.[7][8][9] Many American prohibitionists came to town to try to break bottle laws while living elsewhere or attending college before returning home for good after repeal. One such man was Harry Bridges who helped found one of America's largest breweries - Milwaukee Brewing Company - while still living in Toronto[10]. Additionally, many other successful businesspeople from Bellevue have gone on to make an impact within their industries including businessman Barry Zwicker (founder/CEO/CIO Ameritech Corporation), entrepreneur Tom Gliesser (founder/ CEO/CFO First Data), attorney John Patterson (former general counsel for General Mills) and author Dick Baumann (author).
Bellevue was founded in 1854 by Capt. John N. Bellevue and his wife, Lucy. The town first became a Village of Bellevue in 1865 and later a Town in 1875. In 1915, the City of Bellevue was incorporated. In 1997, the town merged with the village of Bellevue to form a new city government.
