SLC continued developing innovative optics solutions until its sale by Schneider Electric AG in 2009 to Black Hills Optics AG who continue manufacturing them today under the name Black Hills Precision Systems Inc.). The history of laser sights goes back even further than that! One of the earliest examples of using lasers specifically for sighting purposes can be traced back to 1974 when two American scientists named Gordon Bell and Leonard Klein designed what is still consideredthe earliest visible red/green/blue laser rangefinder system – The Bell & Klein VDRR8 mount! After this event, part of Custer's ranch became known as "Custer Ranch." In 1872, when railroad entrepreneur James Jett bought land adjacent to what is now downtown Bellevue from the federal government for $10 per acre ($140 per mile), he changed it into an agricultural township with the name "Bellevure." Jett used his new land to build several shipping docks and factories that helped drive up local prices for goods exported from Nordhoff County. In 1905, when local farmers decided they needed more water than could be found underground or from rivers running through their property south of town (due to deforestation caused by logging), they started drilling for water supplies deep under the earth near where modern day North Park Boulevard meets Interstate 94 (the old Milwaukee Road). When they discovered oil reserves beneath their digs they quickly came up with a new name – Bellevue Oil & Gas Corporation – which stuck until it was sold off to ExxonMobil in 2006. The Village of Bellevue annexed onto Shorewood Township on January 1st 1888 following an election by village trustees which saw three-quarters approval by voters via referendum held two weeks earlier. Shorewood Township had been formed from parts of Noble Township (now Richland) on April 15th 1887 following a merger between those townships due to increasing population density along Lake Michigan shoreline east of Brighton Beach Avenue across from today’s Walmart store site (which opened as Sears Holdings Inc.). Bellevue was founded in 1854 by the brothers Isaac and Jacob Bellevue. They named it after their father, John Bellevue, who had settled in the area in 1835. The Bellevues built a log cabin on the east side of town and started a small grocery business. In 1856, they opened a larger grocery store on the west side of town. In 1861, they moved to their present location on State Street. The Bellevues continued to operate their businesses until their death in 1915. The store was eventually acquired by the Milwaukee County Board of Supervisors and is now part of the Milwaukee County Museum District.
