As early as 1850, Mayor John Downing donated land to the city for an armory and range. The range was located on West Michigan Avenue between First and Second Streets and it served as a training ground for local militiamen during the American Civil War (1861-1865). After the war, Bellevue developed into one of America's leading cities with its arsenal housing over 1,500 rifles and shotguns. The first synthetic targets were made in Bellevue in 1957 by Old National Ammunition Company Ltd., which left behind a lasting legacy on our town's firearms history. Bellevue is a town in the U.S. state of Wisconsin, located on the eastern edge of the Milwaukee metropolitan area. The population was 36,599 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Waukesha–West Allis–Kenosha Metropolitan Statistical Area. Bellevue is one of ten towns in Racine County and one of two cities in Racine County (the other being Kenosha). The town was originally named for Bellevue, England, where French missionaries had established a mission in 1836. Bellevue's first settler was John Prentice, who arrived in 1838 and claimed land near what is now downtown Bellevue. He built a log cabin on his farmstead which served as the town's first courthouse until it was destroyed by an arson fire in 1851. A new courthouse was built soon afterwards and remained in use until 1924 when it burned down again. The first school in Bellevue was founded in 1846 by Mrs. Fenton with help from local farmers and workers under the name "Racine School District No 2." In 1865, the district became Racine County when it was organized out of parts of seven other districts. The current school building opened its doors to students on September 5th, 1927; it has been used continuously since then as a municipal government building with only occasional changes to its design or occupancy (except for four years during World War II when it served as an air-raid shelter). Bellevue also played host to Wisconsin's 1944 national championship football team which spent several weeks staying at Shorewood Lodge before traveling east to play Boston College at Madison Square Garden; this event remains one of only two instances that a professional American football team has ever visited New York City while playing against NCAA Division I opponent (the other instance being Miami University's trip to Philadelphia two years later). In 1957, Bellevue voters passed an ordinance establishing their own police department which would serve as Law Enforcement Services within Racine County until 1969 when they were merged into Racine County Sheriff’s Department operations effective July 1st following ratification by both departments’ boards of directors; this event marked the first time that any municipality within Racine Counties had ever opted into sheriff’s services instead of village/town polic
