Beaver Dam, Wisconsin is a small town located in the United States. The population was 2,118 at the 2010 census. Beaver Dam has a history dating back to 1868 when it was founded as a trading post by Captain John D. Rockefeller and his friends on the Menominee River. In 1905, Congress passed an act that designated Beaver Dam as a national site for optical research. It became home to the National Optical Society (NOS) in 1922 and continued to be so until its dissolution in 1985. A major development in Beaver Dam's industrial heritage occurred in the 1930s when General Electric moved its manufacturing operations from New York City to Beaver Dam. This allowed General Electric to become one of America's leading light industry companies and establish a strong presence in Beaverdam both economically and politically. Other major businesses that have been based here over time include Wabash Paper Company (now Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railway), American Can Beverage Company, Continental Rubber Corporation, Mellanox Technology Corporation, Milwaukee Truck & Trailer Company, Western Electric Manufacturing Company and Thomas A Edison National Laboratory (later renamed International Business Machines). The economic fortunes of these companies have had an impact on local society as well: Wabash Paper company is still headquartered here; American Can Beverage company is now part of PepsiCo; Mellanox Technology corporation has created several significant technology firms throughout North America; Milwaukee Truck & Trailer co-founded Kress Inc., which was later acquired by Boeing; Western Electric ManufacturingCompany built the first airplane factory outside of the US; and Thomas A Edison National Laboratory helped shape modern computer technology with their work on early digital computers at Bell Labs. In 1846, a group of men from Illinois started a ferry service across Koshkonokonkink Creek to get goods to their mills in Racine-Waukesha County. This community was first known as Manitowoc and later as Beaver Dam after an individual named David Beavers purchased land there about 1840. In 1870, the village of beaverdam was founded by John Auld with others from Manitowoc Township when it became apparent that he could not build a mill on his own property due to lack of available water resources.ettlement began near where current day First Street meets Second Street with several homes being built before lumber had even become available locally for building so much as fences or gates! In 1872 James Fenton erected the first schoolhouse west of present day First street…..this school served grades 1-8 until 1893 when Waukesha County made education compulsory for all children! The completion of the Milwaukee & Duluth Railroad allowed businesses throughout central Wisconsin access to markets they couldn’t reach before……this opened up many opportunities for mining and manufacturing here which led to many jobs for people who came during this time period including farmers, mechanics, laborers etc…..the city now has over 100 buildings from this time period alone!
