Beaver Dam is a town in Dane County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 7,663 at the 2010 census. It is the second most populous settlement in Dane County after Madison. Beaver Dam was platted in 1854 by George Bird Griggs. The post office was founded in 1857 and named for Beaverdam Creek. The town was incorporation on November 3, 1871. The first store in the community was built on the north side of Beaver Dam Creek by Julius Kapp and John Atherton. In 1865, corner stores were opened at Main and Elm Streets. By 1880, there were ten stores in the community with a population of 2,500 people. In 1907, four new stores were built: One across from school on State Street (renamed First Avenue), two west of school on Washington Avenue (now Willowbrook Drive), and one east of school on Maple Lane (later renamed Maple Road). That year also saw the construction of the first dam in Beaver Dam history; it was called "the dam" because it impounded Beaver Dam Creek for powering mills along its course. From 1908 to 1912, a series of dams controlled water flow into and out of Beaverdam Creek as part of an irrigation project that raised crops and manufactured goods for local markets
