In 1898, John Mabee opened a barbershop in downtown Baraboo which remains open today as one of the most important businesses in town. Dixon's Mill served as an inspiration for much later development in downtown Baraboo with its large brick building still standing today (although not used for commercial purposes anymore). One such development was John Fritchard's grocery store which replaced Dixon's Mill after it burned down in 1941 (the store reopened within weeks). In 1951, construction began on what is now Northwestern Mutual Life Insurance Company Building which stands to this day as one of downtown Barabo

The population for Dauphin County had grown to about 26,000 by 1821 when it merged with Adams County to form Allegheny County under then-Governor John Adams. When Pittsburgh was founded as a city in 1825 and First Ward became its eastern border; Baraboo Borough boundaries changed as well because no town within Pittsburgh had more than 4500 residents at one time; so when Pittsburgh annexe
Baraboo, Wisconsin was founded on November 6, 1836 by John F. Daly and his father James Daly. The village of Baraboo was named for the brother of Adam Baraboo, a settler in this area. In 1854, the village became a town and was renamed after General David Hunter who fought in the Mexican-American War. The first post office opened in Baraboo on March 1, 1856. On October 15, 1888, the village of Carbo was annexed into Baraboo.
