Some of the earliest documented population expansions in Baraboo, Wisconsin were in 1851 when a group of men from Illinois traveled to the area and started a farm. In 1857, a group of Scandinavian settlers arrived in the town and began trading goods with local farmers. By 1860, there were over 100 residents living in Baraboo. In 1865, a railroad was built through the town and helped increase commerce and settlement. In 1870, a post office was established in Baraboo and by 1880, it had grown to include a total of 114 residents. In 1894-1895, many new businesses were opened in what is now downtown Baraboo as well as an increasing number of people moving into the community. In 1902-1903, an electric streetcar service was created which increased access to downtown for residents and visitors. On July 1st 1907, Baraboo became part of federal territory within the United States following its incorporation as a village. On January 1st 1916, after years of debate among villagers over whether or not to become municipally incorporated again due to lack of funds, the decision was made and on January 2nd 1916 The Village Council adopted Resolution No.#5100 which stated that “The Town has been organized under Republic Act No 8425 effective date 1/2/1916”

Baraboo, Wisconsin is a small town in the Fox Valley of north-central Wisconsin. The population was 1,853 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Milwaukee metropolitan area. The townsite was laid out in 1838 by John Baraboo and named for him. The first settler in Baraboo was Captain George Diggs, who arrived there on July 24, 1838. By 1840, there were six families living in Baraboo: Diggs, Weir, Horney, Backus, White and Neumann. In 1843, Captain David Sibley settled down to farm here and named his home "Sibley's Grove." In 1847–48 Gouverneur Wright came to live here with his family and started a tannery which continues to be run today by descendants of his son-in-law Winthrop Ames Wright. In 1850–51 Danish immigrant Ole Olsen began working as a milkman for the then larger village of Racine. After Racine disbanded its own milk marketing district in 1855 due to financial problems caused by excessive shipments from Norway during that year's route through that city (see Racine v Racine case), Olson continued trucking milk from Baraboo to Racine until he abandoned it around 1860 because of high costs associated with traveling this far away from home each day (). One reason why dairy production declined during the 1870s may have been due to overgrazing on local pastures – however other factors also contributed: increased competition from hay cartels operating out of Chicago; migration westward among farmers seeking new land; technological advancements such as improved machinery allowing large plants to produce more milk per acre than ever before; and environmental changes such as ice age glaciations making it difficult for cows and calves to travel long distances across open country (). Ibid., pgs 184—186 A post office called "Racine" opened on November 15th ,1850 under the name "Fremont". On October 14th ,1852 it changed its name back to "Baraboo". It closed on October 8th 1865 after about 20 years service when electric delivery became available throughout the Fox Valley.. It reopened on November 4th 1896served as an express post office until discontinued on May 1st 1958 . It served as an alternate stop for Milwaukee Road trains between Marinette and Waukesha .
On November 8, 1846, the first Territorial Legislature convened in Baraboo. The town had been organized on April 14, 1846, by a group of farmers and businessmen. On July 1, 1847, the territorial government was authorized to create a school district. The first public school was built in Baraboo on December 15th. In 1865 the Wisconsin General Assembly passed the First National Bank Act which created a national bank in Baraboo. The bank became known as the Milwaukee National Bank. In 1889 the town voted to annex its neighbor Manitowoc County and this annexation led to population growth in Baraboo and Manitowoc County which made it possible for streets and other infrastructure to be built in these towns. The first gas station opened in Baraboo on October 12th, 1923. The barony of Racine was annexed into the town limits on February 20th of that year making it possible for businesses within their boundaries to start using municipal water supplies without having to switch to private supplies.
