Baraboo is a town in Douglas County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 5,827 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Milwaukee–Waukesha–Beloit Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settlement in Baraboo was made on April 6, 1836 by John and Anna Neely as a trading post on the Menominee River. The town was named for General James Baraboo (1775-1815), an American Revolutionary War general who served with distinction under George Washington. In 1838, John Neely organized what would become the first village in Douglas County. The Village of Baraboo dissolved on July 1, 1848 when it amalgamated with two other villages to form the Town of Douglas. By 1870, there were only a few buildings left in town and it had been merged into the larger community of Waukesha. On December 4, 1897, Waukesha incorporated as a city and named its first mayor Anson Phelps Dodge. On November 3rd of that year Baraboeo's incorporation as a village became effective

The first settler to arrive in what is now Baraboo was Isaac Nichols. He built a cabin on the current location of Walnut Street and called it Panther's Nest. In 1846, John Aiken settled in what is now part of the town and he named it Prairie View due to its location near a prairie that he had land for sale. In 1851, Augustus Fenton arrived from Illinois and set up a farm on what is now NE corner 4th Street and NE half block alley between 2nd Avenue and 3rd Avenue NW. He named his farm Empire State because he thought it would be more popular than America which he had heard about from an Englishman living near Milwaukee who had visited there before leaving for good reasons unknown. On November 11, 1861, during the American Civil War (1861-1865), Union troops under General Ulysses S Grant burned down many homes including those belonging to Julius Kappeler and others near present-day NW corner 2nd Ave., SW half block alley between 2nd Ave./3rd Ave., NW corner 4th St./NE corner 3rd Ave., SE corner 1st Ave., Pioneer Cemetery; these events are known as "the Blackout". This destroyed much property including that used by Kappeler & Co., making them unable to rebuild their business until 1865 when they reopened under new ownership with assistance from local merchants including Ewing Halsey & Sons Ford Machine Works where later President Franklin D Roosevelt worked at various times during his political career
On December 5, 1836, the first post office in Baraboo was established. The town was named after General David Baraboo, who fought in the War of 1812. The first store in the town was built by John Fenton in 1841.
