In the early 1800s, Baraboo, Wisconsin was a thriving community with a population of around 1,500. The town was founded in 1836 byodus German settlers and quickly became known for its red dot sight system. At first, the red dot sight system consisted of a few simple sighting devices that were used by farmers to point their guns at targets to get accurate shot. But over time, the red dot sight system grew into what it is today- one of America's most popular hunting and shooting technologies. The Red Dot Sight System was developed in the early 1800s by Captain John C. Steedman of Ohio fame as he designed an improved version of his earlier design called the "Leupold Mark 3." The Leupold Mark 3 was designed to allow shooters to acquire accurate shots from any position on their rifle regardless of wind or weather conditions. This allowed for consistent accuracy across all types of firearms- from pistols to rifles. But even before Captain John C. Steedman invented the reddot sight system in 1836, other inventors had been working on similar concepts. In 1795, Major James Fenton patented a rifle sights that utilized a rotating mirror instead of a focal plane lens to help shooters aim their firearms accurately (Fenton's patent is still registered today). And in 1802, Nicholas-Jacques Conte filed an application for what would eventually become known as the "Conte mount." This mount consisted of two posts that fit inside each other and were used to attach riflesights and optics to rifles (the patent is still extant). So while there are many different factors that contributed toCaptain John C. Steedman's development of the reddot sight system- including his experience with sniper campaigns during the American Revolution- ultimately it was due to his innovation in using rotating mirrors and posts instead of focal planes that allowed shooters across America access to this incredibly precise hunting technology.

The Baraboo Rifle and Pistol Range was opened in 1923. The current range is on the corner of State Street and Washington Avenue in Baraboo. It has a shooting area of 350 acres, including 12 rifle ranges, six pistol ranges, five shotgun ranges, three trap ranges, and one skeet range.
Baraboo is a small town in the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources area, located inoe on the north side of the Milwaukee River. The population was 914 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Racine–Waukesha–Beloit, WI metropolitan statistical area. The first post office in Baraboo was established on December 12, 1836, by George Bogan. The first store in town was opened by Wm. Hickey on November 1, 1840. David Rice started a grocery business in 1851 and later became one of its largest shareholders. In 1865, Jno. Ewing organized a horse racing track which produced some high-quality horses for export to other countries; this led to an economic boom for Baraboo during that era. By 1897 there were nine stores and two hotels in town with a population of 3200 people During World War I, Baraboo served as an airfield for United States Army Air Forces training flights over Lake Michigan; it also housed various military installations including Camp Randall (later Camp Edwards), Camp Butler (later Fort Snelling), and Naval Station Chicago (). Following the war, many businesses closed due to new regulations placed upon them by the National Defense Act of 1916 (), making way for large-scale agricultural production (). In 1970(), Mayor John Kesselman announced he would not seek re-election after more than 20 years service; however, his successor Donny Sheehan quickly picked up where Kesselman left off and kept Baraboo running smoothly into the 21st century (). In 2000(), voters approved a $25 million mill improvement project which will create more local jobs and improve water quality (); this event helped spur development around town including several new restaurants (), nightclubs (), movie theaters (), and homes (). Today, Baraboo's economy continues to grow with steady job growth coming from services such as health care workforces (), online retailers (), data centers (), and food processing plants
