In 1847-48 Jno Bowers built a sawmill and gristmill on the west side of the river near where Modern Elementary School now stands. These mills enabled he town to become self-sufficient and started up various trades including agriculture, carpentry, woodworking, blacksmithing and others during that time period In 1870 John Fritchey organized a farmers' cooperative which grew into what is now known as Farmers’ United Cooperative Union (FUCU). This group developed marketing programs for their products which helped drive local businesses growth and contributed to today's economy. By 1919 FUCU had over 2,000 members across all types of farms and industries located throughout Sheboygan County In 1957 two brothers - Roy Jr (a farmer) and Donny (a machinist) - founded American Canning Company which became one of America's leading canneries later that year Today American Canning Company produces more than 100 million pounds per annum of fresh produce domestically and exports to many countries around the world

The town of Baraboo was founded in 1836 by John F. Doherty and his wife, Catharine. The town was named after the Indian word baraboo, meaning "place where there is a lot of wood." The first store in town was built on the current site of the former Union Pacific Railroad Depot. In 1851, the town had a population of about 150 people and it consisted of just five houses. By 1870, the population had grown to about 350 people and it included twelve houses. In 1872, Baraboo voters passed a resolution using $5 from each person’s personal check to start a bank. The bank opened its doors for business on December 15th, 1872. The first president of the bank was William Burden. In 1896, Baraboo voters passed a resolution declaring themselves an agricultural center due to their high levels of corn production and their location near water resources which permitted them to export large quantities of crops both fresh and dried products. As an agricultural center, Baraboo became known for its fertile soils and its ability to grow many different types of crops including corn, wheat, soybeans, potatoes, onions and celery. In 1957-1958 during the height of Wisconsin's agricultural boom Period II (the Eisenhower administration), Baraboo boasted one hundred thirty-six businesses employing more than two thousand people with sales totaling $2 billion statewide! In addition to agriculture production specifically; other major industries included retail trade (factory stores such as Sam’s Club), health care services (hospitality/motels), transportation (bus lines running through town), light manufacturing (textiles) as well as several smaller businesses serving primarily local needs such as grocery stores etc., making this one important community within larger metropolitan area throughout much rural America during that time period
