At Mr. Witherspoon's store, people could buy different types of telescopes, microscopes, and other Optical Instruments from him and his staff. The railroad arrived in 1880 and made Baraboo an important transportation hub with access to Chicago through the Milwaukee & Western Railroad and to Racine through the BurlingtonNorthern Santa Fe Railway. In 1944, during World War II, Baraboo became one of 25 towns along the coast of Lake Michigan called "Operation Neptune's Spear" to provide food and water for troops stationed there as part of Operation Overlord. At that time it was one of only two communities on shoreline within 3 miles (5 km) of both shorelines - the other being Sheboygan Falls - providing essential supplies for troops fighting on land adjacent to Lake Michigan without having to leave their homes or portsof embarkation sites. Today, many businesses located in downtown BARABOO offer services such as catering, real estate brokerage/mortgage lending/investment advice, floral design/arranging weddings/etc., as well as general store operations including meat markets (poultry), bakery goods (doughnuts/bagels), grocery store items (fruit/veggies), hardware store items (knives/hammers), etc., which continues to be an important player in local economy since 1990 when BARABOO'S CENTRAL STORE opened its doors!
