Baraboo, Wisconsin is a town in the U.S. state of Wisconsin, located on the shore of Lake Superior. The population was 1,867 at the 2010 census. It is included in the Milwaukee metropolitan area. The first known settlement in what would become Baraboo was made by brothers John and Jacob Mayhew on November 14, 1837 as part of a fur trade monopoly with Ottawa. They named their new location for Pierre-Narcisse Marquette, a French explorer who had explored and recorded Lake Superior in 1799-1800 and 1800-1803. By 1840, over 50 families had moved to Baraboo from throughout the Upper Peninsula of Michigan due to the excellent land opportunities available there. In 1848, George Aiken bought 4 miles (6 km) of beachfront property adjacent to present day Baraboo from Isaac Stevens for $1 per acre (. . .) The Aiken family developed this land into an important commercial center during the late 19th century due to its rich resources including coal and nickel Mines that were opened up during that time period. During World War II (1941-1945), many local farmers produced food items such as gasolineoline and canned goods for war efforts while others engaged in manufacturing such as aircraft parts and tires. In 1945, Baraboo became home to General Motors's technical research laboratory which remained until its closure in 2000. Today much of GM's campus can be found within walking distance of downtown Baraboo thanks to some extensive redevelopment completed since then including several high qualityresidential properties along with a large parkland area containing three NHL teams: the Blackhawks (now the Blackhawks/Winnipeg Jets), Senators (now Ottawa Senators) and Maple Leafs (Toronto Maple Leafs). The post office was established at Baraboo on October 12, 1847 under name "Hancock". On January 7th 1861 it changed its name to "Baraboo". The current spelling comes about because two early postmasters - Phebe Daynor(1847-51)and Ira Halsey(1854-) - used different spellings for their last names before settling on BAR-a-boo
