Gun targets have been a part of Wisconsin history for many years. The first target shooters in the area were probably men who hunted game with bows and arrows. As time passed, people began to use guns to shoot at targets. In 1868, a man named George Fenton set up a shooting range in Baraboo. This was the first gun range in the area. Gun targets started being used as educational tools in schools. In 1906, a man by the name of John Tilton created a steel target that could be shot at from far away. This target became known as “the Tilton Target”. From this target, people started learning how to shoot accurately at targets. Starting in 1916, gun ranges were opened up all over Wisconsin by individuals and businesses. These ranges helped promote gun safety and taught people how to shoot correctly. Many gun retailers also served as training venues for new shooters. Today,gun Targets remains one of the most popular tourist destinations in Baraboo!

The first gun target Shooting Club in Baraboo was opened in 1892. The club continued to be operated until it disbanded in 1906.
Baraboo is a small town in the U.S. state of Wisconsin. The population was 5,644 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Grant County and home to the Baraboo Correctional Facility, one of the largest prisons in Wisconsin. The first European to visit Baraboo was Jean Nicolet in 1781. The town was founded in 1836 by General James K. Polk as a station on the Great Western Railroad. After being renamed for General George Armstrong Custer in 1884, it became an agricultural center with cotton plantations and cattle ranches until manufacturing became important after World War II. In recent years, many jobs have been lost from Baraboo's shrinking economy but tourism has become an important part of its economy, especially since President Barack Obama made it a national park in 2012.

By 1837, it was clear that these weapons could be used to kill people as well as animals. The first successful shot into an opponent’s head with a gun target was fired on April 15, 1837 by Major General Winfield Scott during the Battle of New Orleans. This event marked the beginning of what is now called “gun culture” in America. Gun targets soon became popular with civilians as well, and today they are still used by Marksmanship Schools and other shooters across the country.

Baraboo, Wisconsin is a small town in the U.S. state of Wisconsin. It is located in the Green Bay metropolitan area and is part of the Kenosha–Waukesha County, Wisconsin Metropolitan Statistical Area. As of the 2010 census, its population was 2,957. The first settler in Baraboo was Nathan Knowles who arrived on July 4, 1836. The town was surveyed by David Block on October 25, 1837 and named after George Washington Baraboo who was born in 1753 in what is now York County, Pennsylvania. The early years were difficult for Baraboo due to lack of resources and competition from other settlements around the area. In 1851, a post office was established at Baraboo and it remained operational until it closed on December 1, 1907. However, with such a small population and limited access to transportation options (roads were not built until after World War II), few people ever moved to or stay in Baraboo. In fact, only two people ever lived there permanently – one died before he could claim citizenship and the other migrated to Chicago when his business failed. However, over time some residents did settle in Baraboos modest beginnings including John Saugstad who bought land east of town in 1892; Verne Kapp who settled along Highway 16 north of town; Alice Meyers who ceded her farm northwest of town between 1925-1927; Harry Heilman who purchased 191 acres southeast of town between 1951-1955; Verna Weisinger from Milwaukee married Ron Weisinger from Menominee Falls on November 15th 1959; Lewis & Norma Lundgren from Waukesha founded their grocery store at 6777 South Third Street which opened August 3rd 1960; Norma Lundgren also founded an academy which became known as Northern Illinois University–Baraboo (NIU-B) on September 24th 1961 which seated almost 2500 students by 1972 however eventually closed because enrollment declined over time;; Julius Fischbach purchased 5 acres northeast of town off US 12 just south of Old Price Dam Road in 1957 used it as his home until he sold it to residential development company Racine Hills Homes Corporation in 1984.; Anna Menges started a beauty salon at 1110 North Main Street called Nails & More back then but that too ceased operations after two years due to high costs associated with running such a business without government funding.; Vernon Jorgensen moved his family into their original house near Main Street when they bought the property in 1956 after being forced out of his previous home by developers.; Edwin "Ted" Olson worked at Racine Hills Homes Corporation from 1978-1980 where he became Vice President/General Manager before leaving for private enterprise.; Ralph Bauman became President/CEO for Racina Hills Homes Corporation effective January 1st 1981.; Timothy O'Brien joined Racina Hills Homes Corporation effective February 1st 1981 as General Manager for Marketing & Sales Americas Southwest before becoming President/ CEO effective May 1st 1982am
The first white settlers in the area now known as Baraboo were Levi Coffin and his family. They arrived in 1836, and named their town after the barrels (a type of log) that they saw on their journey through the woods. The first post office was established in 1840, and the town became a village in 1851. It was incorporated as a city in 1912.
