It is the smallest of Marinette County's ten towns and the third-smallest town by population after Menomonee Falls and Racine. A post office called "Baraboo" was established in 1844, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1961. The first store on Main Street opened in 1872; it was replaced by the present structure in 1904. In 1928, a sawmill built near present-day downtown became one of the earliest businesses to open for business in Baraboo; it continued to operate until 1984. According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of , all land. As of July 1, 2014, there were 5,462 people living within 2 miles (3 km) of Baraboo proper (+2% from 2010). Baraboo is a small town in western Wisconsin, United States. It was founded in 1847 by the German immigrants, who named it after the ancient city of Babylon. The post office at Baraboo was established in 1853. The population of Baraboo reached 4,512 as of 2010. The first settler in what is now Baraboo was Friedrich Wilhelm Meyer, who arrived in 1847 from Germany. He and his family soon erected a log cabin on the east side of town. A store and post office were built near the present day intersection of First and Second Streets about two years later. In 1850, another pioneer, Denton Cloud, arrived from Minnesota with his family and built a cabin on the west side of town. Cloud's wife, Fanny Goode Cloud, gave birth to their first child there on July 3rd that year. By 1860 most residents had relocated to larger towns or villages nearby; however, several families remained in Baraboo until 1865 when they moved to Waukesha County due to religious persecution brought about by Abraham Lincoln during the American Civil War (see History section below). In 1871 Union Pacific Railroad extended its tracks through what is now northwest Racine County into southeastern Wisconsin; this increased transportation opportunities for people and goods driving northward along State Highway 26 (now Interstate 94) and then following Lake Superior eastward until reaching Baraboo whence they would journey southward on Highway 10 or take exit 11 onto US Highway 36 which led them eventually back home again via Highway 26 to reach their original homesickness-induced destinationville back home again adjacent Pioneer Park located just east off I-94 between First Avenue South and Fourth Street North today where descendants still live today... [Meanwhile] other businesses begansprings up including an ice cream parlor called Candy Canes & Creams operated by Mrs John Wiegand from memory until her death circa 1925; hardware store operated by J F Nielsen beginning around 1870 also general store started opened by Hiram Sprinkle around 1880 with millinery business started around 1890 known as Sprinkle’s Flour Mill Also grocery store started by August Hickey early 1900’s known as Empire Grocery All these businesses grew because people could bring their products down here for sale The community developed primarily due to trade with neighboring villages such as Waukesha County to provide goods needed for agricultural production like flour, pork bellies etc., but also because consumers could come down here for shopping purposes since there was no rail connection available further north yet making it possible for farmers to sell directly to consumers instead of having to go through more distant markets
