Baraboo is a town in Brown County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 1,711 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Brown County. The name is derived from the French word for "a place where two rivers meet" and means "prominence on the lower river." The first settler in Baraboo was George Bowman in 1836. John Sievers settled here in 1847. In 1851, Daniel Willis arrived and founded the city of Milwaukee; Baraboo became part of Milwaukee. In 1902, Wm. Hance established a chemical plant in town and named it Hance Chemical Company after himself and his colleague Jno. Gosson of Chicago *. In 1954, the Town of Baraboo passed an ordinance prohibiting smoking within its boundaries* (*This ordinance expired on November 3, 2006). On July 16*, 2006, a fire destroyed most of the old courthouse which served as both civic center and courthouse until 1984 when it reopened under new ownership as the First Unitarian Universalist Church (FURC). Also damaged were three other buildings: One housedthe school district's library; another housedan insurance office; and still another housedthe town hall until it too was burned down around 2004-2005*. After years of discussion among various groups interested in restoring or reconstructing this structure* (*Mayor Tom Kiefer submitted legislation to that effect to Council on October 8*,2006), effective September 10th*,2013fenestration began repairs which are expected to be completed by December 15th*, 2013†(*It should be noted that not all windows have been replaced since then*) vernacular brick construction with brownstone trimming distinguishes this building from many others located throughout downtown – including but not limited to those built during Mayor Tom Kiefer’s tenure * (*It should also be noted that these projects are no longer funded by any governmental entity*) The exterior features a simple stone facade with brownstone trimming while internally there are several ornate details such as carved wood ceilings and elaborate plaster molding typical of larger American churches at this time period†(*Some newer restoration efforts have included replastering some originalostructures) Inside there are several large stained glass windows depicting scenes from religious life throughout history (e.g., Christmastime celebrations etc.), along with smaller window arrays portraying everyday life inside town limits* (*One particularly interesting window displays scenes from local taverns/bars that were frequented by locals before prohibition set in*)
On this day in 1847, the first post office in Baraboo was established. The town was named for General George Washington Baraboo, who died in 1794.
