In 1836, fur traders from Russia founded a post called Fort Snelling here because they needed access to resources such as fish that could be sold in Russian markets. A year later, Indian traders also established a post here but it failed to survive because it was outfitted only for hunting and raiding rather than trading goods with other tribes members. In 1841, General Anthony Wayne used this location as his winter headquarters when he besieged Fort Dearborn during the Battle of Chicago (1812).
