Baraboo is a small town in the U.S. state of Wisconsin. The population was 5,912 at the 2010 census and 6,521 at the 2016 census. It is part of the Green Bay–Stout metropolitan area. The community was founded in 1836 as a mission station on a farmstead near what is now Baraboo High School. The name means " harbour" or "settlement." In 1892, it became a city after being incorporated by order of the Wisconsin State Legislature. The town was first settled by Germans who arrived from eastern Germany in 1836 to start a fur trading post on what is now known as Southown Drive. By 1840, there were over 100 people living in Baraboo and its environs; it had both German and English names. In 1892, Baraboo became part of the new city of Green Bay with its own police force and mayoralty system; it also gained sewerage, lighting, Streetscapes (a system that allowed for design review before construction began), public water systems, and other amenities not available to other municipalities within the city limits. During World War II, many residents served in military units stationed nearby such as the 214th Heavy Artillery Battalion which fought at Normandy Beach during Operation Overlord; many homes still bear Insignia from this time period including service stars and Purple Heart medals earned while serving overseas with our Armed Forces friends and family back home! Many businesses closed during prohibition but reopened during repeal due to demand from consumers who found local alcohol more affordable than national brands like Jim Beam or bourbon

Baraboo is a town in Barron County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 2,865 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago-Naperville- Schaumburg, Illinois Metropolitan Statistical Area. The name of the town has been variously spelled "Barrebogue", "Barreboise", "Basdorp", and "Barron". The first Barreboise place name was given in 1838 to Nicholas Barreby for his land near present-day Baraboo. The current spelling is based on a post office move from Racine to Baraboo in 1856. The town was laid out by James Fenton in 1837 and named for General Andrew Jackson. He had come to America as an interpreter with the army under General Winfield Scott during the Mexican War and he brought with him a large tract of land that included present-day Baraboo. When Fenton arrived, there were only three men living in what is now Baraboo: himself, John Merrill, and Isaac Perkins. Merrill came over from Canada with Fenton and founded Merrill's Bank which still operates today. Many early settlers married into local families and many barbers are still residents today including Barber Harry who operated his business until his death in 2007 at age 89 years old Early residents also engaged in farming laying out fields that still remain throughout parts oftown today such as east side farmland off State Highway 61 known locally as “the Great Island” where potatoes are raised seasonally . A few miles north along State Highway 61 Lies small unincorporated community called Dunkirk which served primarily as a stop on stagecoaches traveling between Milwaukee (then called Prairie Village) and Chicago (then known as Kenosha). In time this small community grew quite large developing homes, businesses etc., but when state highway 61 became numbered 163rd Street it pretty much disappeared completely from view leaving behind just one home remaining standing today - Dunkirk Hall
The town of Baraboo, Wisconsin was founded in 1836 by Cornelius K. Post and his wife Ann. The first settler in the community was Peter J. Hofer. The town struggled during its early years because of lack of resources and a difficult climate. However, it soon gained a strong reputation for its lumber industry and other businesses that thrived in the area. In 1860, Baraboo became the county seat for Racine County after Racine was merged with Milwaukee County. In 1868, Baraboo annexed the village of West Allis to its city limits. By 1920, the population of Baraboo had grown to over 60,000 residents and it became a major industrial center in Wisconsin during the 20th century. Its economy declined during World War II due to production shortages at nearby factories, but it regained some stability after the war and has since become an important cultural center in the area.
