The name "Ashwaubenon" comes from the Potawatomi word "ashwabeno", meaning "place where game is shot." The first settler in Ashwaubenon was Isaac Ashbury and his family in 1834. In 1845, Amos Mowa developed land near what is now Ashwaubenon and named it after himself. The first store in Ashwaubenon was built on the corner of First and State Streets in 1847 by John Fritchey and His Bros. A post office called Ashwaubenon was established in 1853, but no mail reached it until 1861. In 1870, Wm Hickey opened a grocery store on Main Street which became the center of commercial life in Ashwaubenon. Hickey's son Phebe continued operations until 1937 when he sold out to Ewing Woolworth Company; Woolworths operated it until 1984 when it closed down for good as a result of economic recession. In 1907, lumber barons Cornelius Vanderbilt Holland and Edwin Ladd purchased 80% of the stock of J C Fields Tobacco Company for $11 million because they believed that tobacco would be their next big industry after automobiles; however this prediction never came to fruition as Fields failed to develop any new products over time while other businesses such as steel production did much better In 1928 J C Fields merged with Brown & Williamson to form Brown & Williamson Tobacco Corporation (BB&W). BB&W later merged with American Tobacco Companies Incorporated (ATC) to becomeocalpyse Incorporated (OTCI) However due to antitrust concerns these companies were allowed separate growth within themselves rather than all being integrated into one conglomerate which would have caused them great financial problems OTCI eventually went bankrupt during the Great Depression while BB&W survived unscathed In 1933 Groucho Marx moved into an old millinery shop at 116th St/Milwaukee Ave., across from State Fairgrounds which he renamed ashwabeno (his father's favorite word). He lived there until his death in 1964 . After Marx' death many people used ashwabeno as their address including Jay Leno who taped his first episode at ashwabeno before moving onto Waukesha Avenue . Today ashwabeno remains a popular tourist spot with several events taking place year round such as concerts and art exhibitions

This action helped turn the tide of battle and allowed American forces to escape unharmed. later that year, members of the Third Infantry Division executed two Germans who had surrendered at an olive oil plant northeast of town
