Ashwaubenon, Wisconsin is a small town in the southern part of the U.S. state of Wisconsin. The population was 1,530 at the 2010 census and 2,090 as of 2016. It is located in Sheboygan County on the east side of the Milwaukee River. The first European settlers arrived in Ashwaubenon in 1836, when Danish immigrants were brought overland from Minnesota to establish a fur trading post on what is now Ashwaubenon Peninsula. At that time there was no river or bay to provide water for farming and transportation was by land or canoe across the wide Milwaukee River valley. By 1840, however, some farmers had built irrigation ditches and started growing corn, beans, and other crops on large lots near present-day downtown Ashwaubenon. In 1857 a group of Methodist missionaries founded an outpost called Zion Lutheran Church in what is now downtown Ashwaubenon; it remains one of Wisconsin's largest churches today. In 1862 a branch road (then known as First Avenue) was built from Milwaukee to Sheboygan Falls so farmers could bring their goods downriver to be sold at market; this road also served as a connection between Milwaukee and Sheboygan County until 1924 when county roads were merged into statewide highway system. When Interstate 94 was completed through Wisconsin in 1966, most residents left their rural homes behind and moved into larger townships such as Manitowoc or Racine; however, Ashwaubenon remained largely annexed by Sheboygan County until 1971 when it became its own municipality under the local government law streamlining process established byWisconsin State Legislature chaired by governor Dick Jurek). In Ashwaubenon, Wisconsin, there have been many different types of people who have resided here. The most recent residents are the Ashwaubenon Native Americans, who have been living in this community for over 200 years. Over time, this community has also attracted a number of European immigrants, including Germans and Swedes. The first settlers to arrive in what is now Ashwaubenon were Quakers from Philadelphia. They came to the area in 1847 and built a small log cabin on the banks of the Wisconsin River. There was little trade between these groups so it is likely that the Quakers did not come looking for land but rather to help build a new society based on brotherhood. The next group of settlers arrived in 1854 when John Fechet donated 4 acres of land east of present day Ashwaubenon to Samuel Morse and his wife Sarah Morse. This donation was part of a larger grant which Samuel Morse had given to several families in order to start a farming colony near Milwaukee. This group built their own cabin on the same site as today’s post office – known as “Morse’s Point” – and began trading with local tribes for goods and services. Over time, other German families also settled in what is nowAshwaubenon; some brought their livestock with them while others started businesses such as furriers or farmers. In 1870, the town was incorporated under its current name after Swedish immigrants Abram Gustafsson (1811-79) and August Strand (1820-92). The town developed rapidly due to its location close to railroads and its good water supply; by 1881, there were 1,500 residents living inAshwaubenon proper alone! Ashwaubenon was founded in 1835 by David and Rachelle Ackerman. The town became a railroad junction in the late 1800s, and manufacturing grew throughout the first half of the 20th century. In the early 21st century, however, Ashwaubenon's economy suffered as a result of low jobs availability in nearby cities.
