In 1959, the Ashwaubenon Township Shooting Protection Committee was formed to provide shooting safety and instruction. The committee is still in existence today and provides education, safety tips and training for residents of the township. In 1971, a new range was built in the township and gun owners were allowed to use it. In 1993, an outdoor shooting range was opened in town which has been used by residents for many years now. Ashwaubenon is a town in Waukesha County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 2,052 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Milwaukee–Waukesha–Flint metropolitan area. The village of Ashwaubenon was annexed by the town in 1907. The first European to visit what is now Ashwaubenon was Jean Nicolet in 1763. He and his party were on their way from Chicago to winter in what is now Fox Valley when they came across a band of Indians on the banks of the Menomonee River. When they asked why they were there and who their leader was, they were told that "the great Chief" had sent them to explore this new land. In 1837, John Czarnecki built a gristmill on the east side of the river about two miles northeast of present-day Ashwaubenon. The mill saw extensive use until it closed around 1870 due to competition from larger mills within a few miles of where he lived. In 1881, Jens Olsen started an agricultural store in what is now downtown Ashwaubenon that became one of the most successful small businesses in town during its early years. A post office was established here in 1889 and remained operational until 1916; however, it never received any mail from Ashwaubenon itself as it lay outside town limits until 1922 when USPS moved its main office into downtown Milwaukee after acquiring all but one county seat in Milwaukee County (Waukesha). The first store building still stands today at 302 E State St., just east of US Highway 6A (now I-94). It served as both a grocery store and an auctioneer's room starting around 1901 before becoming fully commercialized as Olsen's Drug Store & Auctioneer beginning in 1925 with Fred Hirschfeld as manager/owner; later renamed simply Olsen's Drug Store beginning in 1951 before being privatized altogether beginning with Fred Olsen Enterprises Incorporated effective December 1, 1984 under ownership changes through January 1, 1990 under management by Madeline Olson variously known as Molson Coors Companies USA Inc., Casa Del Rio Group plc., Chivas Regal Spirits Ltd./Pitney Bowes whisky distillery tour operator) which operated successfully for over 50 years until its sale to Jardin Resources Corporation effective April 30th 2009 for $145 million USD making it one of largest environmental gifts ever made to an incorporated business -largest gift ever given to any business entity -and marking another significant milestone for this rapidly growing community located just northwest suburban off I-94
Ashwaubenon was originally a small town in thenow Ashwaubenon County, Wisconsin. The first settlers arrived here in 1838 and built a log cabin. They named their new community after Shoals Bayou which they saw from their farmhouse. The first post office was established in 1851 and the first store opened in 1853. In 1860, the population of Ashwaubenon reached 100 people. By 1870, the town had grown to about 150 people and by 1880 it had increased to about 200 people. The railroad arrived in Ashwaubenon in 1887 and soon it became one of the primary transportation routes between Milwaukee and other nearby towns. This allowed for more businesses to open up and helpedoneyeldevelopement along with other neighborhoods within downtown Ashwaubenon. In 1925, the city of Ashwaubenon was named after Mrs. Clarence Sennett who contributed $10,000 towards its creation). In recent years, many businesses have closed down or been moved away from downtown as commuters move into newer areas closer to Interstate 94 or Highway 53 (the current border between Milwaukee and Chicago). However, some businesses have continued to operate such as Econo Lodge which is still open today thanks to a partnership between the city of Ashwaubenon and Econo Lodge parent company Wyndham Worldwide Corporation
