The town was named after Ashwaubenon County, Illinois and first settlement in what is now Ashwaubenon County was made by German immigrants in 1836. In 1847, a group of men from Michigan Territory founded a log cabin on the banks of the Fox River in what is now Ashwaubenon County. The first post office was established in this location on December 1, 1847. By 1850, there were over sixty homes and businesses in Ashwaubenon County. In 1865, Abraham Lincoln visited this community while he was campaigning for president and helped give it its name of "Ashwabenon." The first high school building that still stands today was built here in 1922. During World War II, many local people worked as soldiers or sailors to help support the war effort. The economy of Ashwaubenon has been largely agricultural since its founding until recent years when manufacturing and service jobs have become more common; however, agriculture remains an important part of the local economy with several hundred farms producing nearly all of the town's crops including hay, potatoes, applesauce production (the most famous product), eggs (farming also provides labor for many local factories), cattle (poultry operations are also common), dairy products (milk and cheese being some major products) and other goods such as lumber.

Ashwaubenon is a town in the U.S. state of Wisconsin, located on the Ashwaubenon River. The population was 5,822 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Green Bay–West Allis Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first permanent settler in what is now Ashwaubenon was John and Rebecca Cook from Massachusetts in 1845. They founded a log cabin on the present site of town in 1846. A post office called Ashwaubenon was established in 1850, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1960. The community name derived from an aboriginal word meaning "place where two rivers meet." In early Days when Indians roamed this area they would visit this place and call it 'Anishinaabe'. When white people started coming to this area they gave their new friends the same name so that everyone would know who each person belonged to. In 1852, a Methodist church was built with land donated by Luther Ladd and others near the present site of town; services were first held there on April 15th, 1852. The church burned down in 1888 but its remains can still be seen today at 8th & Washington Streets (northwest corner of Washington Street). Reverend Wm Hinson officiated at both meetings which took place at his home on First Avenue NE (east side of Washington Street). In 1863, Whitworth County became one of forty-eight United States states through an act known as the Kansas-Nebraska Act; as a result, much of rural northern Wisconsin came under Iowa control for a time period during this time period. The towns along the river were not included within either county but continued to serve as local posts under federal jurisdiction until 1862 when all United States mail stopped arriving into those towns due to increased Iowa postage rates (the rate for express mail had been raised from five cents per letter to one dollar). This led to some residents moving out into other parts of Wisconsin or even leaving America altogether while others simply ceased operations because they could no longer afford higher postage rates - Ashwaubenon lost its post office status permanently around 1865 though it continued serving as a stoplight for travelers heading eastbound on I-94 overpassing downtown Green Bay
