Ashwaubenon is a town in La Crosse County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 792 at the 2000 census. The name Ashwaubenon comes from a Sioux word meaning "place where the buffalo grazed." The first European to enter the area was Jean Nicolet, who explored and mapped the Fox River Valley in 1772. In 1818, John C. Fremont passed through the area on his way to Milwaukee and found a trading post at what is now Ashwaubenon Falls. In 1846, General David Dixon founded an agricultural community called Dixonville in present-day La Crosse County. A store and flour mill were built there in 1847 by Daniel Wirtham. This community lasted until 1865 when it burned down due to bad weather. In 1865, also in present-day La Crosse County, Abraham Lincoln settled near modern day Ashwaubenon Falls as part of his Experiment Station lands program. The first organized village in what is now Ashwaubenon was formed around 1840 when two families pooled their resources to buy land around what is now High School Road and State Street. These original settlers were known as the Gillecks and moved into their new settlement during winter of 1840/41 after being forced out of their home near Green Bay by Native Americans who raided their farmsteads for food supplies that winter. During subsequent years several other villages were formed including: Indianola (1844), Nicollet (1845), Hegewisch (1849), Washburn (1850) and Black Hawk (1851). Although these villages had similar names they functioned primarily as ceremonial posts or stopping points on route differences between different settlements along the Fox River valley which sometimes led to conflict over trade goods or animal raiding opportunities among various groups of indigenous people inhabiting this region at that time

The town was founded in 1853 by German-Americans and named for an ash tree which grew on their property. Ashwaubenon's history begins with the arrival of Germans in the area in the late 1800s. In 1853, they founded the town of Ashwaubenon on land they had acquired from fur traders who had passed through their territory. At first, most of the settlers were farmers and woodworkers who did not have much to offer else than their land and labor. However, over time, some developers began to develop businesses in Ashwaubenon and its surrounds. One such business owner was Hurdel Emil Kapp, who started a grocery store in 1907 and became one of its largest shareholders until his death in 1945. With this growth came increased development pressure on local resources and Manpower Park – a training center for World War I veteran – opened its doors to accommodate them all in 1915. The village that grew up around Manpower Park soon outgrew it; as a result, Ashwaubenon began to focus more upon its community services rather than becominginvolved directly withManpower Park itself. This change helped keep the town separate from other villages withinDouglas County until 1974 when it amalgamated intothe larger municipality of Milwaukee. Today, Ashwaubenon remains a small but thriving community that enjoys close proximity toits main city counterpart while still remaining largely self-sufficient."
