Ashwaubenon is a town in Marquette County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 1,870 at the 2010 census. The first permanent settler in Ashwaubenon was Levi Coffin on October 2, 1838. The community of Ashwaubenon was organized on December 11, 1854 by a group of settlers who had gathered at the mill pond. On February 20, 1860 the name of the town was changed to honor General Arthur Ashwaubenon who fought in the American Civil War and later served as Commandant of the U.S. Military Academy at West Point. The first post office in Ashwaubenon was established on March 10, 1865 and remained open until July 9, 1870. In 1880 the village began annexing adjacent townships and became a city under its own government with a mayor and City Council. On January 25th, 1907 it merged with neighboring Appleton to form one large city with a population of over 100,000 people known now as Milwaukee

With few new businesses opening up inAshwaubenon since then, its population fell gradually over the next several decades until it reached its current level of around 50 residents in 2000. Despite its history as a vibrant community and cultural center within Milwaukee County for many years now, little is known about Ashwaubenon itself other than what has been reported hereinabove. As such, this paper will explore some of the more significant events that have occurred here over time while also providing an overview of what has made Ashwaubenon so unique as an agricultural community (specifically dairy farming) located on land that has been under cultivation for centuries.
