Ashwaubenon is a small town in the U.S. state of Wisconsin. The population was 1,823 at the 2010 census and 2,022 as of 2016. It is part of the Racine-West Allis Micropolitan Statistical Area. The first Europeans to visit what is now Ashwaubenon were French traders from Quebec in 1673. The first permanent English settlers arrived in 1763, when Jonathan Edwards founded Green Bay on the east bank of the River Des Plaines east of present-day Ashwaubenon. When Wisconsin became a state in 1848, Ashwaubenon was included within Racine County; however, it remained unincorporated until 1959. In that year, its town charter was granted and it became an incorporated village with its own government and police force under the name "Ashwabeno". By 1972, all but oneInterestingly - or so I have been told by my ancestors who were there then - of what amounted to over 150 businesses had closed because of economic decline brought on by Wisconsin's Republican governor David O'Neill's austerity policies during that era). In 2000, Ashwabeno voters passed a referendum establishing a school district which would serve all residents regardless of income level or residence in neighboring towns such as West Allis and Janesville; this helped to revive shopping and economic activity around Ashwaubenon center where several large retailers anchor today's downtown area including Kohl’s department store chain (the only major retailer still open inside the old post office), Sears & Roebuck Catalog Department Store (closed 2011), JCPenney (closed 2013) and Macy’s Old Town Mall (closed 2019). With new development continuing apace nearby such as nearby housing developments for senior citizens/workers with disabilities/student groups etc., total employment now exceeds 2200!

Ashwaubenon is a town in Waukesha County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 1,852 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Milwaukee–Waukesha–Elyria Combined Statistical Area. The first settler in Ashwaubenon was Abram Devereux. He and his family arrived from Maine in 1836 and planted a cabin near present-day Ashwaubenon Lake. In 1840, he married Sarah Auld and they had six children. The Devereuxes were farmers until 1861 when they bought land to establish the town of Ashwaubenon on which they built a gristmill and store. They served as town controllers from 1871 to 1885. By 1890, most of the people living in Ashwaubenon had moved away because of natural resources depletion or competition from larger towns along the river valley elsewhere in Waukesha County. However, some residents kept their homes and businesses in town through World War II until it closed its doors for good on September 26th, 1945 due to lack of business activity after the war's end. During World War II, much of what is now downtown Ashwaubenon was destroyed by bombing raids that happened over Germany while other portions were rebuilt using federal funding provided through lend-lease programs following Japan's surrender Effective December 1945, Ashwaubenon reached its peak population with over 2200 residents according to 1940 census figures but declined rapidly thereafter due largely to loss of jobs associated with post-war reconstruction initiatives including decimation of rural society throughout Wisconsin resulting in an increase poverty rate among Blacks relative to Whites; demolition/replacement/inclusion of many older sod houses by modern housing developments; steady influxes (both locally & nationally) of Hispanics & other Asians - often coming unaccompanied or sponsored by relatives or friends who owned businesses nearby; overall impact on community fabric caused by rapidly changing demographic makeup resultant both directly & indirectly from participation within post-war American society
