Ashwaubenon is a town in Marinette County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 1,868 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Green Bay–Munster metropolitan area. The first people inhabiting what is now Ashwaubenon were the Menominee and Sauk Indians. They arrived in 1792 when they were driven out of their land by the French. The first white settler in the area was John Prentice who arrived in 1836. He built a tavern called "Prentice's Post" on what is now Main Street. In 1830, Ashwaubenon was incorporated as a town and named for General David Ashwaghena which means “the place where he founds his home” or “the great leader” of the Sauk people at that time. In 1871, when it merged with Green Bay to form the Green Bay–Munster metropolitan area, Ashwaubenon became one of its five townships and continues to be governed by its own board of trustees today. The primary economic activity during much of history has been agriculture; however, industry has also arisen over time in this rural community including manufacturing (manufacturing products such as flour, cheese and tobacco), transportation (railroads ran through town), health care (an early hospital opened in 1910) and retail sales (now mostly online). Ashwaubenon is a town in the U.S. state of Wisconsin. The population was 3,812 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Green Bay–West Allis Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first Europeans to visit Ashwaubenon were French traders and travelers who visited in 1672 on their way from Quebec to Lake Superior. They named the settlement after Mount Ashwagandha, an 8,000-acre (3,100 km2) mountain located in present-day Michigan Territory and claimed by France as part of La Grande Montagne. In 1836, the United States acquired what is now Wisconsin from Mexico through the Treaty of Fort Madison and renamed it land grantWisconsin Territory. In 1848, Ashwaubenon became a town when its citizens voted to become one under territorial laws passed by Congress that year. The town's first post office was established in 1851; it later changed its name to Ashwaubenon Township and then again to Ashwaubenon County in 1907. In 1954, tensions over American nuclear testing near Japan led to World War II veteran James Byrnes's retirement from his job as manager of a local chemical plant and his conversion into an anti-nuclear activist known as "the Atomizer." For four years he preached against nuclear weapons at a weekly church service at which he distributed hand grenades filled with plutonium oxide instead of communion wine because he believed that nuclear warfare would lead directly to human extinction). At Byrnes's urging, residents formed neighborhood watch committees throughout the area during this time; these groups helped prevent further atomic testing by police efforts while also warning people about the dangers associated with radioactive materials storage yards nearby populated areas like Milwaukee and Waukesha...
