Ashwaubenon is a town in the White County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 5,552 at the 2010 census. Ashwaubenon is part of the Green Bay–Fox Valley region. The first permanent settler in what is now Ashwaubenon was Nicholas Wisniewski in 1838. Wisniewski named his community after one of his parents, Ashwubenon (pronounced "hah-wah-buh-nuh"). The name may have been derived from an Indian word meaning "place where woodcrafts are made." In 1845, John and Catharine Goodrich came to the area and founded the towns of Appleton and Waukesha. Goodrich named his communities after himself and his wife Catharine's father, Augustus Appleton (1775-1847). When the great Milwaukee & Illinois Railroad arrived in Green Bay in 1856, it linked up with other railroads that had been building through central Wisconsin over time. One of these railways was the Chicago & Northwestern Railway. In April 1861, this railroad merged into the Union Pacific Railroad. At this point, Appleton became part of Minneapolis/St Paul; Waukesha became part of Omaha; and Appleton again became a separate town when its neighbor Wausau split off from Minneapolis/St Paul in 1916. The first post office in Ashwaubenon was established on October 3, 1862 by Alexander Aikenhead with a letterpress printing press he had borrowed from James Bogan during construction of Minnesota's Twin Cities – which were then under construction near present day Madison Avenue and Interstate 94 on what is now University Avenue NW.). Aikenhead printed bills and other documents at his home until 1865 when he moved to another location within town limits. His successors continued to operate local post offices until 1969 when all but two were closed due to cost overruns with ZIP code 55163 having their last mail delivery on November 6th1973 however some remnants remain today including: 1) The old Post Office Tower still standing as condemned property leased for use as housing by American Legion Post #8012; 2) Hickory Ridge Drive which runs parallel US Highway 41 just east of US Highway 12 south of Ashwaubenon; 3) An original blacksmith shop located between Fourth Street NE and First Street SW.; 4) An old grocery store located on East Main Street SE cornering West Main Street SE; 5) An older hospital located on North Third Street SW opposite current day Park Elementary School
