He and his family arrived on the Mayflower with 154 other colonists from England. In 1853, Appleton became an incorporated village under the name of East Prairie. In 1860, it became a town when it merged with neighboring towns Waukesha and Racine. In 1941, Appleton was purchased by Monsanto Company and became one of its corporate campuses for scientists working on hybrid corn varieties in their landmark research center there until 1984. The apple orchard that stands today near downtown Appleton has been in operation since 1792 when French traders first landed here to trade with Native Americans for goods such as clothing and medicines. One of America’s earliest agricultural giants – DuPont Company – began operations here in 1915 when they bought land from farmers to build a synthetic milk plant using two years’ worth of labor from American workers who had taken leave from World War I munitions production plants nearby
On July 14, 1847, the first steamboat on the Wisconsin River arrived in Appleton. The boat was called the "Wisconsin" and it transported goods from Fond du Lac to Milwaukee. In 1851, a railroad was built between Appleton and Waukesha and this made shipping much easier.
