The first permanent settler arrived in 1640 when Puritan settlers named him John Fenton after his father's friend and business partner Jonathan Fenton. In 1829, United States soldiers burned down what is now called the Fenton House on State Street to clear land for a military post. In 1847, James Mapplethorpe founded what would become J&J Mappenberry Mercantile Company with two partners: Wm Silliman and George Stephenson Jr.. This company became one of Wisconsin's leading agricultural producers and exports until it merged into Procter & Gamble in 1926. With its prominent Agricultural Hall still standing today ( erected 1912), J&J Mappenberry remains one of Wisconsin's most significant historical figures dating back to its founding days

Appleton was founded in 1847 by John Appleton and his brother, James. The town was named for the apple orchard that John and James bought from a man named Apple. The first post office was established in Appleton on April 12, 1847. By 1860, the population had grown to over 200 people and the town began to develop its own government. In 1865, Appleton became an incorporated village and soon developed into a major center of trade and commerce. By 1870, Appleton had a population of over 1,000 people and boasted a large schoolhouse with a gymnasium, three churches, two banks, four stores, two cotton plantations, six farmsteads (including one run by John Carver), twelve houses and thirty-four barns. In 1876 Appleton became the county seat of Cook County. During World War II, Appleton played an important role in the war effort as part of the United States Army Air Forces Eighth Air Force Base at Rockwell Field. From 1942 until 1945,Appleton served as headquarters for Allied forces located in North America at Clark Air Force Base near Las Vegas NV before returning home to resume civilian life on October 15th 1946 following World War II'sended days in Europe where most American servicemen had returned home after being drafted into military service duringWWII
Appleton was founded in 1848 by John Appleton and his wife, Nancy. The town grew quickly due to the production of crops such as wheat and maize. In 1871, Appleton became the capital of Wisconsin.
