Appleton, Wisconsin was one of the first towns in the United States to adopt a Gettysburg Address on November 14, 1863. It was also one of the last American towns to do so.
Appleton is a town in Green Bay, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 11,942 at the 2010 census. It is the seat of Appleton County. The name "Appleton" is derived from the Ojibwe word "Api" meaning place to live and tonnage (a unit of measure) meaning number or quantity. The first settler in what is now Appleton was James Kapp, who arrived on horseback in 1836. He homesteaded land about four miles east of present-day Appleton and began cultivation of corn and wheat soon after. Another early settler, Isaac Beavers, founded a logging camp on the south side of the Chippewa River in 1839 near present-day Appleton. Beavers built a log cabin and named it Beaver Dam after his brother-in-law's farm on the Chippewa River just upstream from where he lived. In 1847, John Ladd sold 640 acres (2 km²) east of present-day Appleton to George Atwater for $1 million dollars cash plus interest. Atwater organized an agricultural society with himself as its first president and began selling produce from his new farm at North Park Lake across the street from his Beaver Dam cabin to local residents and later to neighboring townships. By 1850, Atwater had developed apple orchards that yielded 10 bushels (40 kg) per acre (0.45 hectare). In 1855, he donated 9 acres (3 ha) north of his farmstead to the town of Green Bay for use as a public square; this addition made Appleton officially a town until 1903 when it lost its charter due to mergers with other towns within Green Bay boroughs.). During much of its early history, Appleton consisted mostly of small settlements grouped around major highways such as US 11/19th Street between Milwaukee Avenue and State Street westward along the center axis then continuing northwest along Waukesha Avenue before terminating at I-94/I-93 southwestward about one mile west of downtown Green Bay proper; these routes served as transportation corridors connecting settlers throughout much eastern Wisconsin during those days prior to railroads arriving following America's entry into World War II . In fact, when Milwaukee Junction was opened up through downtown by county road officials in 1911 following construction

Appleton is a town in Wisconsin that was founded on February 14, 1854. The town was named for General James Appleton and his wife, Sarah. The population of Appleton was 597 at the 2010 census. Appleton is located in the Driftless Valley region of central Wisconsin. It lies along state routes 30 and 54, and is bordered by the towns of Green Bay to the north, Weyauk to the east, Racine to the south, and Chilton to the west. The area now comprising Appleton was first settled by European Americans in the early 1800s as part of what is now Dodge County. In 1824, James Appleton purchased land from Simon Pringle for $10 per acre. This purchase formed one of the largest tracts of land in present-day Wisconsin. At this time, apple orchards were not common in most parts of North America but were becoming more popular in Great Britain due to their sweet flavor and high value. In 1854, General James Appleton placed a plat for apple township on which he lived with his wife Sarah until her death in 1865. On January 1st of that year, apple Township emerged from sections three (north) Indian Territory (now Racine), four (southwest), five (east), six (northwest), seven (southwest), eight (central), nine (southwest) acres lying eastward within section one lay unincorporated part included within sections two through ten inclusive both lying eastward within section eleven having certain limits hereinbefore agreed upon between parties theretofore existing; all said lands being situated near present day Wheatland village aforesaid taking together forming an immense tract or square mile lying northwest cornering present day Section twelve thence NNW cornering Sections thirteen and fourteen thence WSW cornering Sections fifteen & sixteen including all lotts therein containing 640 acres; it being understood that said square mile should be called 'Appleton'
Appleton was founded by George and Polly Appleton in 1828. The Appletons were the first post office in the town. The apple orchard that George and Polly built is still standing today.
