When Appleton was founded in 1852, it was the most northerly town in Wisconsin. The town's namesake, John Appleton, donated land to the new community and set up a store on the first floor of his home. The town quickly grew and by 1860 had a population of 175 people. During the American Civil War, Appleton didn't take sides but many residents did business with Union forces. The town became one of the largest slave-producing towns in Wisconsin after Lincoln issued an Executive Order freeing all slaves within three months of his inauguration. In 1865, Appleton incorporated as a village and continued to grow until its incorporation into the City of Milwaukee in 1924. Today, Appleton is located about 30 miles northwest of Milwaukee and has a population of over 575 people. It has experienced some growth since its incorporation into Milwaukee - for instance, it now has two high schools (Appleton High School and Waukesha West High School) as well as four churches (Church Of Christ Lutheran; Methodist; Presbyterian; United Methodist). The first store in town opened on Main Street in 1847. In 1860, apple orchards were started near Center Road and State Highway 11 by Zenas Gage and his brother Israel Gage. In 1865, an act to organize a township created Appleton Township with a population of 563 residents. The township's first meeting occurred on November 15th, 1865 when all but two residents met at Isaac Haughey's house on Center Road to discuss the formation of a township government. On December 3rd, 1865 it was approved with a total population of 809 residents living in 36 blocks divided into nine wards which would be represented by three trustees each: one elected every year for life; one appointed annually by the board; and one who resided within fifty miles of the borough seat who supervised activities within that borough also. On January 1st 1870 (the date Iowa became a state), after much debate due to lack of representation within the township due to its size it passed an act creating Racine Township which would have had responsibility for all aspects east-of-the- Mississippi River including areas now located in Appleton Township such as West Allis and Joplinville/Lapeer County while still retaining vesting rights over landowning families Initially slated for annexation by Racine but later rescinded because Racine felt their territory didn't extend far enough into eastern Cook County; this left what is now north central Cook County with no organized community outside Cook City proper until largely immigrant communities such as North Lawndale sprang up around village cores like Oak Park/Dunwoody IL beginning about 1900) In 1908 there were 100 people living in Appleton Borough; however only 10% actually lived there full time according to surveys taken during that time period! By 1930 only 7% lived full time here... again!! Although apportionment changes during World War II did result in an influx of many young married women & their families - mainly from outstate WI - most everyone else left following hostilities ended In 1945 .. when Appleton lost its charter due to Mennonite influence
