Appleton is a town in Outagamie County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 12,059 at the 2010 census. Appleton is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The first permanent residents of what is now Appleton were traders and fishermen who traveled to the nearby Ottawa River for fishing rights in the early 1800s. In 1837, John Fitch opened a store in what is now Appleton and named it after his home town of Albany, New York. A few years later, James Kintz took over Fitch's store and renamed it Kintz & Company Store. By 1870, there were several stores in the community including J.C. Penney's First National Bank (later Penney's) which became one of Americas leading retail chains with its original location on Water Street near present day State Street/Appleton Municipal Airport." In 1872-1873, when Milwaukee was experiencing an epidemic of measles that killed more than 150 people and left thousands more ill or disabled, Drs. George Davenport and David Starr Jordan conducted a clinical trial withuntreated measles cases on their farm outside Madisonville about 25 miles northwest of Appleton where they inoculated two cows with anti-mumps serum from Hungary before shipping them to Whatcom County to test whether cowpox could be prevented from spreading through contact with infected animals." Dragonspaw Brewery began production in 1898 by mergeding three small breweries - Allyn Brewing Co., La Crosse Brewing Co., and Manitowoc Brewery - into one company under the name Michigan Brewing Co.. This brewery became one of the largest brewers in America until it closed operations in 1966 due to antitrust charges brought against it by American Beer Companies Incorporated (ABCo). In 1984-1985 Dragonspaw Brewery built a new brewery at 715 Wisconson Ave NW located across from UW Oshkosh campus that was used as an operating headquarters for ABCo during manufacturing processes for their beer brands Heineken and Pabst Blue Ribbon until its closure in 1996 following ABCo's divestiture from Anheuser Busch InBev Netherlands parent company SABMiller plc." It should be noted that Appleton did not become officially incorporated until 1907 when Outagamie County created outagamiecountygov website . It should also be mentioned that according to USGS data as reported on 4/1/2007 there are no current listings for any buildings older than 1880 within Town limits

Appleton, Wisconsin is a town in Douglas County, Minnesota, United States. The population was 1,754 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Minneapolis-St. Paul metropolitan area. Appleton was incorporated as a village in 1871 and became a town in 1908. The name "Appleton" came from the Ojibwe word "aipi," meaning "place of hunting." The first settler to arrive in what is now Appleton was Alexander Kippenberger on July 10, 1856. He and his family were farmers and traders who traveled through the area trading goods with other Native American tribes for food. Kippenberger named his farm after him and his wife Catharine (née Ladd). In 1861, John Fetterman arrived from Sweden with his family and started a bakery near the present day intersection of Duluth Road and Maple Avenue. By 1865, there were over 20 bakeries operating in Appleton with an average production of 5 tons per week. In 1870, Jens Jacobson established a tannery which produced leather good for shoes, saddles and other horse products until it closed around 1928. In 1888 Charles Hargrave opened up a grocery store on North Main Street which became one of the most successful businesses in town until it closed down in 1978. During World War I (1914-18), Appleton served as Headquarters for Douglas County troops stationed along the Dakotas border including Battle Creek National Monument where General John Akeley commanded forces during operations against First World War veteran Dodge Indians on November 4th 1916 while also fighting against Sioux insurgents at Fort Snelling on December 15th 1916; both actions took place within 3 miles of where Appleton sits today just south of Interstate 94 exit 172A (Dakota Ave.). After hostilities ended there were no military engagements or civilian activities conducted within 2 miles radius of present day Appleton resulting in increased economic development opportunities for local citizens such as farming land that had been unoccupied for years Prior to this time many farms hereabouts consisted primarily of prairie grassland without any trees or strucured ground cover serving only as pastureland providing little seed bank or immunity to natural disasters such as floods or windstorms making them very vulnerable to fire etc... With few exceptions most all apple trees grown hereabouts originated from wild fruit picked by hand either coming directly off tree's branches or picking wild apples off the ground next to trees being harvested thereby enhancing nutritional value not typically found when cultivated varieties are used.... Over time apple tree growth has become so extensive that we currently have more than 700 acres planted with some 75% bearing fruit.....Today Appleton remains an agricultural community nestled among dense forested surroundings dotting its streetside allowing residents ample space to enjoy their wide variety of outdoor activities while keeping close contact with their friends & neighbors
Appleton was founded in 1837 by Solomon Appleton and his wife, Susannah. The town grew rapidly after being laid out on a largely Indian-owned land grant. In 1851, the town had a population of 350 people and by 1860, it had increased to 1,500 people. Its growth continued through the years as new businesses were opened up and the community became increasingly prosperous. In 1907, apple orchards began to be developed in the town and soon became one of its primary economic assets. By 1929, apple orchards accounted for over 50% of the town's GDP. Despite this success, during World War II Appleton was negatively affected by shortages of food products due to Nazi Germany's blockade of Europe. As a result, many local businesses closed their doors and residents lost their jobs. However, through Developmental Assistance Program (DAP) funds which were donated by then-President Franklin D Roosevelt, many local businesses reopened within a few months and experienced significant growth once again. Today, Appleton is home to around 915 residents who are predominately whitecollar professionals working in industries such as technology, education/training services, healthcare/healthcare products and services etcetera. It also has some sizable Hispanic populations that have found employment opportunities in various sectors throughout recent years thanks to immigrant families fleeing violence or poverty back home in Mexico City or El Salvador etcetera
