During World War II (1939-1945), Appleton served as both an airfield and army base for troops stationed in Minnesota and Wisconsin. There were also several factories located here including CBS Radio Corporation's Headquarters which manufactured radios for many different countries during World War II. In 1963, Appleton became one of the first cities to have its own landfill when the city created appleTON Landfill Incorporated to manage and operate municipal solid waste disposal services within the town limits

According to the USGS Historical Atlas: "In 1889-90 (the first full decade following incorporation), appleTON built its first public schoolhouse; it replaced an earlier frame building which had been destroyed by a fire." Appleton's rich history goes back to its founding fathers who were some of the first people in that area to settle down and start families. Isaac Taylor Appleton donated over 30 acres (12 hectares) of land for what would become appleTON. He also founded two other villages in that area - Wauwatosa and Calumet City - so his name will always be associated with those villages as well. Thanks to IsaacTaylor's philanthropy and hard work, appleTON has thrived since its incorporation as a village on May 26th 1854! On April 3, 1846, the first Mormon settlers arrived on the Appleton Peninsula. The area today known as Appleton was part of Waukesha County prior to becoming Racine County in 1853. The first business in the town was a store and post office established by George Washington Smith in 1846. In 1850, apple orchards were started and still exist today. In 1862, Appleton became the county seat of Racine County. A new courthouse was built in 1865 and has been used ever since.
