T-shirts were first made in Appleton, Wisconsin in the early 1900s. They were typically printed on a cotton shirt and would be worn as clothing or given to friends as gifts.
Appleton is a small town located in the heart of Wisconsin. The population was 3,873 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Marathon County. The townsite encompass what is now two villages, Appleton and Mayfield, as well as an early nineteenth century post office named Appleton Falls. According to the 2000 census, there were 2,914 people living in Appleton proper and 1,948 people living in Mayfield. As of the 2010 census, there were 4,059 residents total in both villages combined - more than double the population at any point from 1980 to 2000. The town began as a Methodist church settlement on land donated by John Witherspoon and other prominent Methodists from Holland Township (now Ashland). In 1847-49 Reverend J.H. Howe built a log cabin near present day Mayfield for his wife and five children while he served as pastor at Holland Methodist Church; later that year Rev Howe donated an additional 7 acres (3 ha) to lay out into town square which became known as "Appleton" after his daughter Annie's home state of Illinois (). A post office called Appleton Falls opened on November 25th 1857 (the first Post Office west of the Mississippi River) and was moved to its current location three years later when rail lines reached Appleton through nearby North Vernon (). The first settler in what would become Appleton was Isaac Chapman () who arrived with his family in 1858 (). He founded one of the original stores within walking distance of today's Square One Shopping Center (); also note that this store was not part of today's Village Square but stood on opposite sides of Main Street until it burned down around 1955-1956). Other early settlers included James Knoppers (), David Wells (), John Gorman (), Hiram Soper (), Cyrus Weitzman (), Jacob Hesseltine () and Solomon Rothrock (). In 1862 local resident Tilton Thorpe laid out a township north-west of present day Appleton onto which he named it after himself () - much to the chagrin of some established citizens who felt their community had been properly given its name already! In 1865Thorpe sold most or all his holdings within township boundaries to Captain Ayer Broyles () for $1,000 (). captain Ayer Broyles donated 8 acres (3 ha) east side OFsquare one where he built what would eventually become First Congregational United Church Of Christ (); also note that this building still stands today adjacent to Town Hall Plaza). In the early 1930s, a series of rifles called the Thompson submachine gun were developed. These guns were used by the US military in World War II and were known as the "M-1 Garand". The M-1 was an American rifle that had been designed by George S. Patton and manufactured by Colt Firearms Company. In 1949, Colt decided to discontinue production of the M-1 rifle and replaced it with the Browning Hi-Power Rifle. This gun was originally designed as a bolt action rifle but it became popular for its semi-automatic fire ability.
Appleton, Wisconsin is a town in the U.S. state of Wisconsin and the county seat of Fond du Lac County. The population was 9,844 at the 2010 census. The town has been served by Appleton Municipal Airport since 1927. The first settlers in what would become Appleton were two families who emigrated from Sweden in 1836. They named their new village "Fond du Lac," after the Ford River which runs through it. In 1851, John Gorman patented the land that became Appleton; he had bought it from Aaron Wirschebach for $100 cash. By 1870, apple orchards were being developed on most of the downtown blocks and many buildings still remain from this time period including Gorman's Store (now part of Sears), Cook's Hotel and Post Office building (now occupied by First National Bank). In 1902, when Appleton became a city, it had a population of only 350 people but quickly grew with help from its sister city of Fond du Lac which also incorporated in 1902. In 1916, during World War I, the United States military built an airfield just north of Appleton to provide fuel for planes flying combat missions over Europe; this area now forms part of Waukesha County Park . During World War II, much effort was put into developing munitions production within Appleton; this led to several factories remaining open until they closed down during the war years as well as a large amount of housing developments overall being built throughout both cities/towns within Greater Milwaukee Area . Today there are over 10 thousand residents living within either city limits alone while additional suburbs are located close by such as Janesville and West Allis . Although many businesses have closed or relocated throughout these years due to economic conditions – particularly township-wide declines in manufacturing jobs – many others continue to thrive such as McLaren Dairy which operates five milk plants across central Wisconsin ; JCPenney has operated a store here since 1987 while Kohl's began operations here more than thirty years ago . These types of retailers attest not only to continued growth but also how tough it can be for small towns across America when faced with difficult competition from larger metropolitan areas .
Appleton was first established in 1837 as a small community on the banks of the Menomonee River. The town grew rapidly when it became the official capital of Wisconsin in 1851, and by 1861 had reached its current size. Appleton experienced significant growth during the late 19th century and early 20th century thanks to its central location, fertile land, and ample water resources. In 1925, Appleton was merged with neighboring Racine to form the larger city of Racine.
