It is the largest city in Green Bay County and the second-largest city in Wisconsin after Milwaukee. The land that now makes up Appleton was first settled by German immigrants in 1835. The town of Appleton was organized on November 3, 1851, from parts of West Allis and Beloit. Appleton's growth began with its annexation by Green Bay in 1872 as part of that city's efforts to build a larger area for trade and industry. In 1916, Appleton became one of sixteen townshtariffs (towns with their own police department) within Green Bay County when it was created as a result of the county's merger with five other counties. At the time, it was also one of only two cities east of Milwaukee that did not have an urban core surrounded by rural residential areas - the other being Racine. On December 1, 2006, Appleton became home to both NASA's Glenn Research Center and Boeing Phantom Works when those companies merged to become Rocketdyne Limited Partnership effective January 1st 2007 under United Technologies Corporation Headquarters located just east of downtown Appleton on First Street North which had been leased from United States Steel Corporation since 1984 for use as ATK Aerospace Operations Facility (now Hughes Aircraft Company). As part of this changeover many buildings on East Main Street were demolished including Headquarters Building - which stood until 1994 - while others such as Engine Assembly Building were renovated into high-tech offices/labels plant becoming known as "Rocketdyne Place".

The town was platted in 1837 by John Appleton, a member of the Wisconsin House of Representatives and brother-in-law of the first settler, Isaac Brock. A post office was established at Appleton in 1839, and remained in operation until it be discontinued in 1907. According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of , all land. As of the census of 2000, there were 2,041 people, 710 households, and 553 families residing in the town. The population density was 21 people per square mile (9/km²). There were 824 housing units at an average density of 13 per square mile (5/km²). The racial makeup of the town was 98% white (of any race), 0% black orAfrican American, 0% Native American Indian or Alaskan Native; 0% Asian; and 2% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 3%. There were 710 households out of which 34% had children under age 18 living with them, 56% were married couples living together, 10% had a female householder with no husband present, and 24% were non-families. 20% of all households were made up of individuals and 6% had someone living alone who was 65 years Of Age or older. The first known mention of Appleton is from the year 1636, when it was named for John Appleton, a member of the Wisconsin Assembly. Appleton was a small town located in present-day Winnebago County, Wisconsin at the time. It became an incorporated village in 1857. In 1871, Appleton had a population of just over 350 people and was one of the smallest communities in Wisconsin. However, by 1907 it had increased to 1,200 people and became one of the largest villages in that state. It experienced significant growth during World War II as military personnel moved into the town after being discharged from military service elsewhere in the United States. The war led to an increase in residents and businesses within Appleton and eventually brought about its current size. Today, Appleton is a thriving community with several stores and restaurants along with a number of cultural attractions including two high schools and two libraries
