Appleton, Wisconsin is a small town in the Milwaukee County area of Wisconsin. The population was 7,362 at the 2010 census. It is located on the Fox River in eastern Milwaukee County. The town was first settled by Germans in the late 1800s. Appleton grew rapidly in the early 1900s as a result of railroad construction and industrial growth around nearby Waukesha and Racine counties. In 1960, Appleton annexed parts of West Allis and Robbinsdale to form a new municipality called Appleton-West Allis. The annexation led to rapid growth for both municipalities, as industry shifted from agriculture to services and manufacturing. By 2000, Appleton had reached its current size and shape thanks to continued suburbanization along I-94W and other transportation arteries. Appleton has been home to many prominent people over the years, including three mayors: George Aiken (1921-29), Clifford Olson (1937-41), and Jerome Hauer (1959-63). During World War II, Appleton played an essential role in providing ammunition for Allied forces during Operation Overlord; many residents helped provide food and supplies for troops stationed in Germany. In addition, members of the town's fire department were among those who responded quickly to emergencies at Waukesha Pier during Hurricane Agnes in October 1985. The local media company WKBT Television has its origins here too; it began operations as a radio station on AM 950 kHz in 1922 with call letters WDIE.. WDIE was later moved to FM 97.3 MHz before becoming WWJB/KDKA upon purchase by then Hearst Corporation owner John Kress on May 1st 1978 (the original WWJB calling sign had been WPWR). Kress sold WDIE/KDKA back to Hearst Corporation on January 14th 1992 after serving as its official licensee since that date...WWJB changed their callsign back again on September 10th 2006 from WWJB/KDKA to KLFY which is now sister station KBYS(FM) & 100% owned by ABC Radio Incorporated.. KLFY broadcasts a syndicated talk show morning & afternoon each day throughout most of America weekdays...

Appleton, Wisconsin is a town in Green Bay County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 8,521 at the 2010 census. The name Appleton is derived from the Ojibwe word "Appleton" meaning "place of many streams." The first settler in Appleton was John Applegate (1787-1871), who came from England with his family and plowed land on the east side of the White River. He built a cabin on what is now First Avenue in 1828. A post office called Appleton was established in 1836, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1907. In 1839, Isaac Adams bought land northeast of present day Appleton and erected a house which served as the nucleus of what later became Green Bay. In 1861, Samuel Morse set up shop near today's downtown to build a telegraph line between Milwaukee and St Paul. Morse named his company Washington Telegraph Company after President James K. Polk's victory in the American Civil War that year. On October 1, 1872, Appleton incorporated as a village under the Town Act of 1865. By 1890, there were over 100 businesses operating within its boundaries; small farmers and their families made up most of its population then. traits that continue to define Appleton today are its small size - only 2 square miles - combined with its focus on education: more than half of all residents are college graduates or above . During World War II, much manufacturing activity took place within appletown; aircrafts being produced at both Racine Lake Airport and Waukesha Arsenal were among many products created here during those years . Although times have changed since then (the city annexed most of northwest Green Bay into its borders circa 1990), appletown has continued to maintain strong cultural ties to its rural surroundings: several annual festivals occur within town limits including Harvest Festivals & Open Air Market each fall., while applebees remain an important part of local agriculture
