Allouez is a town in Dodge County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 1,822 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Dodge County. The name "Allouez" is French for "the apple orchard". The first post office in Allouez was established on December 12, 1854, and was called Prairie du Chien. The first settler in Allouez was John Sisson. In 1875, Harry Wirth founded the town of Allouez on land donated by Wirth's father-in-law, George McCormick. Wirth named the town after Pierre-André Allouez who had come to America from France in 1785 and became an interpreter for the U.S. Congress at Philadelphia before dying there in 1802. In 1919, Edwin Hines merged his farm with that of neighboring farmer John Vandemare and formed the Vandemare–Hines Farm Company which continued to operate until its merger into Amalgamated Sugar Refining Company (ASR) in 1959. The local paper mill closed down around 1945 but some remain as part of Heritage Paper Museum/Wisconsin State Historical Society collections including one building still used today as a print shop: Ariton Paper Works located on Main Street between 2nd Avenue SE and 3rd Avenue SE/. Allouez is a town in and the county seat of La Crosse County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 10,893 at the 2010 census. Allouez was founded by Danish immigrants in 1846. It is named after General Anthony Allouez, who served as a colonel in the Union army during the American Civil War. The first settler in Allouez was Lars Christensen who arrived in 1847. He and his family built a log cabin on what is now State Street. In 1852, Ole Andersen bought land from Lars Christensen and started to grow corn and raise hay for livestock. That year, he also built a sawmill on the river near present-day State Street. By 1860, all of Hansen's land had been developed into farmland with five gristmills, four barns/stockyards, twenty-two residences (including nine schools), two churches (one Congregational), one store/livery stable, one schoolhouse (later converted into an apartment complex), and fifteen other businesses including five stores and eleven livery stables.
