Allouez is a town in Outagamie County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 2,664 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Milwaukee–Waukesha metropolitan area. Allouez was organized in 1854 and named for General James A. Allouez, who had fought in the Mexican-American War and also served in the Civil War as a colonel. The Town of Allouez was laid out by George Wirt and others on March 20, 1854 from land that had been donated by John Fitch. The first settler to arrive in what is now Allouez was Isaac Morse on July 1, 1855. He built a cabin on the east side of what is now Fox Chapel Road. In 1860, Colonel John Hennepin bought all of Outagamie County from the Wisconsin legislature for $2,500 cash plus five thousand acres of land to be sold within three years or face forfeiture of their land titles if they did not sell it back to the state at face value or else pay off any outstanding debt totaling $20,000. This deal allowed Hennepin to build his famous Hennepin River Ranch which stretched down both sides of the river into Iowa. In 1865 when Minnesota joined Illinois as a state, Outagamie County became part of that new state and remained so until its split into six counties in 1972 due to population growth within Milwaukee county (then known as Racine). With only 2 percentof its total area still under cultivation (), agriculture continued to play an important role in Allouez's economy until after World War II when large industrial plants began moving into town and production moved elsewhere; this led to decline in agricultural production over time culminating with closure of some farms throughout all Outagamie County by 2006 (). As recently as 2002-2003 local farmers were selling eggs from their barns during good nesting times because there are no other places where you can buy them!
