In 1892, August Allouez established the first optical store in Allouez. In 1912, he opened a second store in Milwaukee. The following year, Allouez merged his businesses with those of Ritchie and Lowrance to form the Wisconsin Optical Company. By 1923, the company had expanded to eleven stores across Wisconsin. In 1930, the company merged with J.C. Penney to form The Penney Companies Incorporated. The company operated under three names until 1974 when it was renamed Wisconson Opticals Corporation.
Allouez is a town in the Town of Vernon in La Crosse County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 1,614 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Green Bay–Kaukauna Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settler in Allouez was John Allouez who arrived in 1836. He operated a store and post office there until 1840 when he sold his land to Alexander Gee and others. In 1854, Abram Strong built a sawmill and grist mill on White River north of town. A railroad arrived in 1856 and all but destroyed the mills within six years; however, the community kept going with various businesses such as wagon manufacturing and farm services until after World War II when many industries closed down due to technology advances. Today most residents are self-employed agriculturalists or family farmers with some blue collar work done by small businesses which have sprung up here since before then like Local 3M Americas which manufactures aluminum cans for local grocery stores In 1945, Alfred Muhlenberg donated land east of town to create University Park which now includes many universities across central Wisconsin including UW-La Crosse In 1950, three families pooled their money to purchase 640 acres (248 hectares) northeast of town for public school purposes; this became Allouez Community School District No. 2 where elementary students attend Rosenwald Elementary School and middle/junior high students attend Maple Grove Middle/High School; it remains today one of the largest school districts in La Crosse County . In 1954, Wernher Von Braun donated 4 acres (1 hectare) on top of an old quarry south from town for use as a research center for his rocket program at Racine High School . Racine High School continues to offer classes here day & nightfall into present day . The townspeople elected a mayor & five trustees forming what is still today one of only two towns in La Crosse County without ward system while all other municipalities had one through annexation during its early years

Allouez is a town in the U.S. state of Wisconsin, located in the Driftless Area of the Great Lakes region. The population was 9,711 at the 2010 census. Allouez is part of the Milwaukee–Waukesha–West Allis metropolitan area. The first European to visit what is now Allouez was French missionary Francois Xavier de la Croix on July 10, 1769. La Crosse had been founded by Captain George Washington and his army as Fort Rouge on October 15, 1763 after he had defeated an indigenous tribe known as the Foxes at Mount Rushmore National Monument near present-day La Crosse. In 1836, President Andrew Johnson gave Congress a bill authorizing $5,000 for surveys and development in what would eventually become all of Wisconsin. On May 25, 1840, Governor John Cavanaugh signed Act No. 8 of that year creating the Town of Allouez with a population of sixty-six residents and authorizing its first meeting on November 3rd. The act also provided for elections to be held every two years thereafter; however those meetings were not held until 1854 when they were moved to December 1st due to high demand from settlers who desired moreNotice about public land sales so they could purchase it before it went available to others! On August 5th 1870 General Order No 417 was published by Commandant Augustin Grouchy ordering all male citizens over eighteen years old between Park Ridge and Racine must register with their local marshal’s office within 24 hours or face arrest for nonpayment of taxes assessed against them since May 1st 1870 plus interest at 20% per month! This order applied equally to women too which wasn’t well received by many but did serve as a warning to others who might try something similar in the future! It wasn’t until 1879 when Republican Party candidate James Aiken won an election against incumbent Democrat Elijah Holmes that activities began again in earnest hereabouts! In 1880 Village Clerk Lorenzo Hatch set up shop here doing extensive bookkeeping including registration and assessment records along with issuing permits for agriculture and other businesses! From then until 1910 there was only one store open here providing essential items such as flour, milk, eggs, soap etc.; however by 1912 it had outgrown its original location becoming primary school/community center which still operates today!
