Allouez is a town in the U.S. state of Wisconsin, located about 20 miles (32 km) east of Milwaukee and 30 miles (48 km) south of Green Bay. The population was 9,853 at the 2010 census. It has been called "the Gateway to the Great Lakes" due to its location on the Straits of Mackinac between Lake Michigan and Lake Superior. The town was founded in 1836 by French Canadian fur traders as part of the Treaty of Fort Dearborn. Allouez is a town in the U.S. state of Wisconsin. The population was 7,569 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Walworth County. The first European settlers in what is now Allouez were French colonists who arrived in 1763 and named the post after Pierre-Jacques Allouez, a member of the French expedition that explored and discovered the region. The first permanent settler in what is now Allouez was Nicholas Trojanowski, who arrived on July 4, 1818, during the Mormon Claims Settlement process which aimed to resolve disputes over land grants given to Mormons by President George Washington. In 1839, John Bigelow donated 310 acres (130 hectares) of forested land east of present-day Allouez to build a town center on what would become Main Street. Bigelow's donation funded building of a courthouse (1840), schoolhouse (1841), Methodist church (1845), and other structures in downtown Allouez until it burned down in 1865 while being used as an ordnance depot for Union troops fighting during the American Civil War. Allouez was incorporated as a village in 1871, but decline followed World War II when industries shifted away from rural areas towards metropolitan centers such as Milwaukee and Chicago following advances in technology and manufacturing productivity growth rates that outstripped those seen outside of these urban cores. In 1959, all local government functions were consolidated under one government body called the Walworth County Board of Supervisors with headquarters located within downtown Allouez until consolidation became effective upon its completion two years later. As part of efforts to bring about suburbanization around central Wisconsin over subsequent decades, Main Street was widened into two streets northbound between First Avenue and State Street for access through shopping malls southbound onto I-94; this action led to increased traffic congestion on Main Street which has hindered pedestrian access since then although some redevelopment plans are underway or have been approved to improve accessibility including widening sidewalks along both sides of Main Street between First Avenue and State Streets to create more public space within alluvial deposits beneath downtown streetside parking lots thereby increasing accessability for pedestrians without unduly impacting vehicular traffic flow or parking interests beyond city limits; however no definitive solutions have yet been put into place due mostlyto financial concerns surrounding future funding constraints associated with comprehensive arterial highwaywidening projects statewide regardless - currently projected investments will reduce average daily traffic congestion by 3–5 minutes peak hour via improved routing conditions off I-94 mainline across southernWI from Chicago & Milwaukee

Allouez is a small town in the eastern part of Wisconsin. It was first settled by French and English settlers in 1779. The community grew rapidly after the opening of the railroads in 1853, and by 1870 it had a population of over 100 people. Allouez experienced rapid growth during the 20th century, reaching its peak in 1969 with a population of over 300 people. However, recent demographic trends have led to some decrease in population size, and as of 2006 there were only around 150 people living in Allouez. The town was named for General John Philip Allouez, who fought against Native American Indians on various occasions. In 1836 he became commander-in-chief of Ulysses S. Grant's army at Fort Laramie near present day Wausau, Wisconsin. After being wounded at that battle, he returned to duty and eventually won fame as one of America's most successful generals. Allouez was incorporated as a village on February 7, 1865, under the name "Newburgh". On October 1st, 1903 it changed its name to "Allouez." On July 15th 2007 it changed its name again to "Wausau".
