Allouez is a town in the Driftless Valley of west-central Wisconsin, United States. The population was 1,845 as of the 2010 census. It is part of the Kenosha County, Wisconsin Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first white people to live in Allouez were French fur traders and missionaries who came from Quebec in 1763. They named their new settlement after Pierre Allouez, an early explorer and cartographer in Canada. The town was founded on June 3, 1836 by Norwegian immigrants Lewis and Clarissa Thorndike allouez who settled near the current site of downtown Allouez. In 1856, a post office was established at Allouez with Wm Halsey as its first mail carrier. In 1886, steamboats began ferrying goods between Manitowoc and Milwaukee so that residents could find jobs on the Mississippi River system. The last steamer ran service in 1919 when it was replaced by a truck shuttle service called Prairie Paddle Service which stopped at various locations along the river system until 1971 when it became known as Wisconsin State Highway 10. In 1954, construction started on what would become Central High School which opened for students on September 14, 1955. One year later (1955), Allouez had its first fire department with six firefighters organized from three stations located around town: one each at Main Street/First Avenue; Second Street/Lake Street; and Cedar Street/Fulton Road (now Civic Center Drive). In 1959, a two-story school building was completed next to Central High School which served grades 9-12 until 1966 when West Side Intermediate School opened for grades 7-8 instead In 1969-1974 a three-story annex to Central High School housed offices related to student services including counseling and testing while also serving as an art classroom and warehouse used for storage during construction projects
Allouez was a town in the Grant County, Wisconsin, United States until it was disbanded in 1848. It was named for Colonel John Allouez, who served as a military officer during the Mexican-American War.
