It is part of the Milwaukee–Waukesha–West Allis Metropolitan Statistical Area. The Town of Allouez was organized in 1851 and named for Isaac Allouez, a settler who had come to the area in 1838. The first store in what is now the town was built by Captain John Purdy in 1853. The first post office was established in 1854 and named for Captain Purdy's wife, Anna (née Belcher). In 1870, Arthur Buell founded the townsite of Fond Du Lac on land that he had bought from the Potawatomi Indians. In 1872, Wm. Crain purchased all of Fond Du Lac from Buell and renamed it Allouez after his father-in-law, Elijah Morse Allouez. The first school opened in Allouez on November 3rd, 1873 under instruction from Miss Sarah Latham Alford. A new school building was erected soon afterwards which still stands today as a community center. In 1910, William Halsey donated $2 million towards construction of a new college campus which would eventually be called University Park at West Allis; this donation helped make Allouez one ofWisconsin's wealthiest communities and one of its most popular tourist destinations due to its wealth of historical significance and unique architecture
