The town of Allouez was founded in 1856 by German immigrants. The first post office was established in 1857. The name allouez comes from the Ojibwe word "ałhawa" meaning "a place where rushes grow". The first settler on what would become Allouez were two men named John and Jacob Grimmett. On November 12, 1876, the village of Allouez incorporated as a municipality with a population of just 15 residents. In 1912, voters adopted a resolution to change the name to honor General George Washington Carver who had been born in nearby Clybournville and died in 1916 at age 90 years old. On October 2, 2013, after being deliberated upon for over three years, Allouez approved an amendment to its Charter which renamed it George Washington Carver Park after him. The town was named for General James Wilkinson, who had been the first U.S. military governor of Louisiana after the Mexican War.
